Upon entering Abbey Lane Elementary School’s Multicultural Night, Levittown fourth-grade student David Zelaya took a passport photo.

It was a night of culture for Levittown students and their parents from Abbey Lane Elementary School, who attended the school’s first Multicultural Night, held at Levittown Memorial Education Center.

Prior to entering the event, the students took a photo for their passports in the Customs area and then joined their peers for a delicious meal of diverse cultural foods donated from 11 local eateries and district families.

There was also entertainment, including a mariachi band from Margarita’s Café, step dancing by Donny Golden School of Irish Dance, a snake charmer from Caravan Connection and Tribal Dance Long Island, a flamenco dance demonstration by parent Lisa Nazli and partner Vito Genna, a taekwondo demonstration by Y.H. Park Taekwondo Academy, and a Greek dance performance by Abbey Lane faculty members.

Angela Bandura and mother Olga Bandura brought a dessert from their native Ukraine to Abbey Lane’s Multicultural Night.

Principal Dr. George Maurer explained that the Multicultural Night Committee planned the well-attended event. Families who brought food representing their culture also submitted a recipe, which will be included in the school’s recipe book. “It was a wonderful evening and an event I hope we can look forward to each year,” Dr. Maurer said.
