The Garden City Recreation Department will this year again be offering discount tickets to area amusement parks. Tickets can be purchased at the recreation office at 108 Rockaway Ave. Cash or check will be accepted for payment. These very popular discounted tickets are for:

Summer Camp Registration Begins

The recreation and parks office is pleased to announce that the 2016 Summer Camp Brochure is now ready and available at its office at 108 Rockaway Ave. and online at www.gardencityrecreation.org. There are a variety of camps offered for children ages 4 to 15 as well as US Sports Institute’s offerings beginning at age 2. Camps being offered include basketball, baseball, soccer, lacrosse, girls’ volleyball, field hockey, computer coding, science, language, Legos, filmmaking and much more. So stop by the office to pick up a brochure and remember, camps fill up fast so register early.

NEW** Berlitz Language Camps For ages 7 to 11

Let’s play with languages. In these classes you will learn to speak a language while making friends and having fun. You will learn how to talk about your home, family, pets, food, hobbies and other things you want to tell other kids about your life. You will sing songs, play games, make crafts, act out skits, and much more, including creating your own special project for a surprise on the last day of class.

Youth Basketball Camp

The Garden City Recreation Department will be conducting a Youth Basketball Camp for boys and girls who are residents of the Incorporated Village of Garden City and entering first through sixth grades in September. Come join us and learn what it takes to pass, dribble and shoot in this camp. The purpose of this program is to provide instruction in self improvement, basketball fundamentals, team play, group cooperation, and most important of all, fun.

When: Week of June 27 to 30 or
week of Aug. 1 to 4
Where: St. Paul’s Field House
Time: 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. for children entering first and second grades
11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for children entering third to sixth grades
Fee: $100

Boys And Girls Lacrosse Camp

For children entering first through sixth grades in September. Here is an opportunity for youngsters who are residents of the Incorporated Village of Garden City to learn the techniques of catching, throwing, scooping and shooting through fun drills. They will also learn the rules of the game by scrimmaging. This is a basic camp where no experience is necessary and equipment is provided.

When: Week of July 11 to 14
Where: St. Paul’s Field
Time: 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. for children entering first and second grades
11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for children entering third to sixth grades
Fee: $100

Youth Baseball Camp

The recreation department will again conduct a Summer Baseball Camp for boys and girls that are residents of the Village of Garden City.
This instructional program is offered for boys and girls in first through sixth grades. The camp will focus on individual skill development and the importance of playing together as a team.
Youngsters in each age category will be divided into appropriate skill levels and will receive group instruction.

Equipment Needed: Baseball glove, sneakers or rubber cleats

When: Week of July 18 to 21 or

Time: Choice of 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. or
11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for children entering first through third grades

Softball Camp

The softball camp will teach young aspiring players entering grades 3 through 7 the basic skills of softball. Every aspect of the game will be covered including hitting, fielding, base running, pitching and more. Team play will be emphasized. The goal of this camp is for young athletes to improve their overall self confidence and knowledge of the game.

When: July 18 to 21
Time: 3 to 5 p.m.
Where: Community Park Softball Fields
Cost: $100

Girls Volleyball Camp

The girls volleyball camp is geared toward the beginner who would like to learn the game of volleyball and the intermediate level girl who would like to keep their skills up during the summer.This camp is open to girls entering grades 7 to 10 in September. Instruction and drills will be run by the recreation staff.

When: July 18 to 21

Yoga For Youngsters

The recreation department’s certified yoga instructor will offer yoga classes for boys and girls who are residents of the Village of Garden City in grades 1 to 7. Children attending this program will learn movements, postures, and breathing techniques which will help with relaxation, self awareness and fitness.

When: Week of Aug. 8 to 11

Time: 9 to 10 a.m. entering grades 1 to 3

Computer Workshop On Coding For Kids
Entering grades 4 to 7

Introduction to Coding

In this multi-session class, your child learns the basics of computer language, code structure and implementation of all. A participant must be comfortable with computers and keyboarding to take this workshop. The computer workshop is being run by Sharper Training Solutions.

PLEASE NOTE: COMPUTERS ARE PROVIDED WITH TWO CHILDREN TO EACH COMPUTER. PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT YOUR CHILD WILL BE SHARING A COMPUTER TERMINAL.

Nature Adventures….
A Program That Explores The Living Things Around Us

The recreation department and the Garden City Bird Sanctuary are joint venturing to offer a program experience “Nature Adventures.” Children ages six to nine are invited to spend the morning at the Garden City Bird Sanctuary learning about how they can work hand in hand with nature. This one-week, two-hour program will meet at Nassau Haven Park and then move into the Sanctuary, with walks, crafts and take homes for each child involved.

When:Week of July 11 to 14 or week of July 18 to 21

Time: 10 a.m. to noon

Pee Wee Sports Sampler

The very popular recreation program will continue this summer in our neighborhood parks. In this four day program, your child will get a taste of a different sport each day as the recreation staff takes them through some fun skills and drills. The group will then make an arts and crafts project to take home. Children ages 4 to 5 who are residents of the Village of Garden City are invited to register for this fun program.

When: July 18 to 21 (Grove Park) or Aug. 1 to 4 (Edgemere Park)
Time: 2 to 3:15 p.m.
Cost: $80

Summer Mad Science Camp

Mad Science of Long Island is a company who provides a wonderful learning experience in a camp setting. Residents of the Village of Garden City entering grades kindergarten to six are encouraged to attend. The topics and details for each camp are listed below. Topic: Crazy Chemworks
When: June 27 to 30
Entering grades 2 to 6
Shake up a flask of fun in the lab as a junior chemist. During four half-days of chemistry, campers get to handle laboratory tools, build and break molecules and pick up some tricks on chemical changes.

Topic: Junior Robotics
When: July 11 to 14
Entering Grades kindergarten to 3
Enter the world of elementary robotics. Campers get a chance to design their own robots, learn about the parts inside a robot and experiment with real robots. Each camper will work daily on a robot and take it home at the end of the week. Material fee to be paid the first day of class: $20

Topic: Detective Academy
When: July 25 to 28
Entering grades 2 to 6
Recreate the scene of the crime with the science of forensics in this hands on look at crime scenes. Collect evidence and connect the dots to find the culprit using clues and detailed observations.

Topic: Advanced Robotics
When: Aug. 1 to 4
Entering grades 3 to 6
Learn about robots in our world today, experiment with sound sensing, line tracking and programmable robots. Test your skills as you build your own robot arm to take home. Material fee to be paid the first day of class: $45

Experiment with sound sensing, line tracking, solar-powered and programmable super cool robots as you build your own working robot to take home. Material fee to be paid the first day of class: $35

Explore the fields of robotics and chemistry in this camp. Take home awesome daily science projects and complete a robot through the week. Material fee to be paid the first day of class: $25

Entering grades 2 to 6
Discover the frontiers of space as campers explore our Earth’s atmosphere to the outer reaches of the solar system.

Topic: Forensic Science
When: Aug. 29 to Sept. 1
Entering grades 2 to 6
Focus on forensics in this hands on look at crime scenes. Identify and collect evidence with fingerprints, trash and tracks.
Summer Tennis Camps For Ages 4 to 15

The Garden City Recreation Department’s Tennis Camp program offers children aged six and up an opportunity to learn or advance their tennis skills while working with experienced tennis pros in a fun setting. Camps are set by age and children will be grouped according to ability within their camp. All sessions are held at the Community Park Tennis Center. The age of the child at the start of the session will determine which session the child may attend and proof of age may be required. Please read the information below to determine which camp your child is eligible to attend. If you have a password you can register online for any of these camps. Otherwise download a registration form and mail it with payment to the recreation office at 108 Rockaway Ave. Walk-ins will be accepts beginning May 19.

Tots And Pee Wee Tennis
Pee Wee Tennis is offered to children who are village residents ages 4 to 6. Eligibility is determined by the child’s age at the start of the session. Skills are learned by fun and easy to do drills taught by the tennis staff.

Time: 9 to 10 a.m.
Cost: $55

Novice Camp
For ages 6 and 7. This camp will teach serving, rallying and the basics of a tennis game, keeping it fun for the younger tennis set.
Time: 1 to 2:30 p.m.
Cost: $85

Junior Camp
For ages 8 to 11. For all levels of experience, this camp will group players by ability so that everyone can move to the next level.
Time: 10 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
Cost: $100

Junior Camp Plus
For the child aged 8 to 11 that is looking for a full day of tennis. This camp will provide tennis instruction in the morning, followed by lunch time and a special activity, then ending the day with
tennis matches. Children must bring their lunch to this camp.
Time: 10 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.
Cost: $220

Senior Camp
For ages 12 to 15. For all levels of experience.
Time: 1 to 2:30 p.m.
Cost: $85

Summer Bricks4kidz—A Lego Camp Experience For 6 To 10 Year Olds

BricksKidz will offer the following camps this summer for children ages 6 to 10 years. They are:

July 11 to July 14—Clash of Bricks
For ages 6 to 8. Gather your barbarians and archers. It’s time for battle…Bricks 4 Kidz style. Collect and store gold and elixir to train troops and build villages. You must stop at nothing to defend your village from enemy attacks. Experience the thrill of battling barbarians, greedy goblins, powerful PEKKAs and wild wall breakers. All this and more at Clash of Bricks camp.

July 18 to July 21—Mining and Crafting for ages 6 to 10
Minecraft is a game about placing blocks to build anything you can imagine. At night monsters come out, make sure to build a shelter before that happens. Experience the world of Minecraft with Lego bricks in this fun camp. Kids will start by crafting their shelters and some of the mobs, critters and tools using Lego bricks. Students will face new challenges each day, building models and crafting key elements from the popular Minecraft game.

All classes will be held in St. Paul’s Cluett Hall and will run from 9 to 11:30 a.m. The cost of this program is $225 each week. Incrediflix Film-Making Camps For Ages 7 To 14

Incrediflix is back. This very popular film-making camp guides children through the aspects of this great hobby. Children will work in age appropriate groups to create and make their own short film. Topics are listed below. Lunch supervision is included for any child who would like to stay for both sessions of that week’s camp. All flix will be professionally edited and will be downloadable within a month after camp ends.

Where: Community Park Tennis Hut
B $150 for each ½ day session, or $290 if you register for both sessions in the same week, bring your lunch and stay for two classes.

Live Action Flix
When: Week of July 11 to 14. For ages 7 to 10 from 9 a.m. to noon
Do you want to have a blast making a movie? You’ll go from “Action” to “That’s a wrap.” Participants will be guided through the Hollywood process as they brainstorm, location scout, bring in props and costumes, act and direct in a collaborative movie that is fun for the entire audience.

Lego Flix
For ages 7 to 10 from 1 to 4 p.m.
Attendees undoubtedly love Legos and can create incredible Lego worlds, so now it’s time to bring those worlds to life in Lego stop-motion animated flix. Legos are provided and participants provide their imagination. Students will create a Lego set with Lego characters for a movie they storyboard, write, shoot and voice-over in age-appropriate groups.

Action Flix
When: Week of July 25 to 28. For ages 11 to 14 from 9 a.m. to noon.
In these action movies, you’ll get to use a green screen, camera tricks and special effects to create your own live-action adventure movie. Students will collaborate to write, act and direct in this action-packed camp where kids will be taught fake punches and kicks to thrill the audience.

Advanced Lego Flix
For ages 11to 14 from 1 to 4 p.m.
Attendees undoubtedly love Legos and can create incredible Lego worlds, so now it’s time to bring those worlds to life in Lego stop-motion animated flix. Students will create a Lego set with Lego characters for a movie they storyboard, write, shoot and voice-over in age-appropriate groups. In this advanced class, students are given more instruction on how to create compelling stories and more independence to try ideas that may be more difficult.

Animation Flix
When: Week of Aug. 1 to 4. For ages 7 to 11 from 9 a.m. to noon.
In this fast-paced camp, students will create up to five stop-motion animated flix. Each day students will use a new style of stop-motion, combining the favorites of past years with some completely new styles, making this camp new each year for everyone to enjoy. It’s the ultimate arts and crafts camp where campers create, direct and film their movies in age-appropriate groups.

Minecraft Flix
For ages 7 to 11 from 1 to 4 p.m.
Kids love Minecraft. Let their imagination be their guide as they turn the popular video games into an exciting Minecraft world made out of paper. Using stop-motion animation, students will bring the creepers, animals and more to life. Students will write, storyboard, shoot and add voice-over in age-appropriate groups.

US Sports Institute’s Summer Camps For Garden City Recreation

US Sports Institute is back and working with Garden City Recreation and Parks for this summer. Many camps are being offered for residents of the Incorpoarted Village of Garden City ages 2 to 14.
