Stewart School fifth-grader Dian Wakeham was recently named as one of 16 students from Nassau, Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island and Westchester that won major prizes in AAA’s annual Traffic Safety Poster & Video contest.
AAA Northeast Director of Traffic Safety John Corlett presented the students with plaques and monetary awards in a ceremony held at Mineola’s Davenport Press restaurant on Thursday, June 2.
AAA’s contest provides an opportunity for young people to learn basic pedestrian, bicycle and motorist safety, as well as motor vehicle occupant protection and DUI prevention. They illustrate a safety theme in poster format at the elementary level and in video or poster format at the high school level.
More than 1,600 entries, depicting traffic safety slogans, were submitted by students in the Club’s New York region. Each design was judged on originality, execution, visual relationship and effectiveness of communicating a traffic safety message.
AAA Northeast is a not-for-profit auto club with 62 offices in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Rhode Island providing more than 5.2 million local AAA members with travel, insurance, finance and auto-related services.
