Driver Charged With Manslaughter in Fatal Freeport Crash

An alleged unlicensed driver was charged with manslaughter following a crash that killed a 33-year-old woman that was his passenger in Freeport on Wednesday night, Nassau County police said.

William Billups, 45, of Hempstead, was driving a Buick LeSabre southbound on Rutland Road when his car struck a westbound Mercedes Benz at the corner of Seaman Avenue at 8:20 p.m. Wednesday, police said.

The Mercedes then hit a house. The driver was taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Billups was taken to a local hospital for treatment of a leg injury. His passenger was pronounced dead shortly later.

Homicide Squad detectives impounded both vehicles and are continuing the investigation. The victim’s name was not immediately released.

Billups was also charged with assault and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. He will be arraigned at a later date.
