Sunday morning brought bright sunshine and brisk winds, which was a good omen for the annual Manhasset Womens Coalition Against Breast Cancer (MWCABC) 5K Family Fun Run/Walk held at Mary Jane Davies Park on Oct. 23. The excitement was palpable and the adrenaline high. You could tell something was going on in the park with the DJ pumping out lively music and hundreds of Manhasset moms, dads, kids and tots gathering to enjoy this fun morning event. T-shirts were being handed out by the registration table and Equinox came in to warm up the runners for the 5K run. Coffee was donated to help ward off the chill of the early morning winds.
The course was slightly augmented this year to ensure the participants were able to make it to the post-run activities. The race started at Plandome Road and Andrew Street. Runners came up Plandome Road to Plandome Court South, Plandome Court, Heights Road, Brookside Drive onto Stonytown Road, up Rockwood Road to Woodedge Road, onto Pinewood and Old Pine Drive to Nassau Avenue, traveled on Munsey Place up Beechwood Avenue to Ornderdonk Road and finishing at Andrew Street. The course participants arrived back at Mary Jane Davies Park for the post-run activities and award ceremonies. This 18th annual walk/run featured the grand prize drawing of the MWCABC raffle. The cold weather could not stop the community members from joining together to raise funds for breast cancer research and to support the MWCABC Outreach program.
The MWCABC would like to thank all of the participants—more than 800 people, of all ages, who came out to support the cause. The day proved to be a fun day filled with smiles, laughter and exercise, too. The volunteers from the cross-country teams, the Junior Coalition and the National Honor Society and the MWCABC board deserve a special thank you for tirelessly taking on tasks in order to ensure the day’s success. Sunday was proof—this community is doing its part to find a cure.
