South High School’s Winter Concert 1 will be held on Thursday, Dec. 8, at 7:30 p.m. in the school auditorium, 341 Lakeville Rd. The concert is free and the community is welcome to hear the instrumental and vocal groups.
The instrumental groups performing will be Jazz Band, String Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra and Wind Ensemble. Vocal groups will include Mixed Choir and vocal ensembles A Cappella, Soul Sisters and Soul Brothers.
The Jazz Band will open with “Groove Merchant,” “Let the Good Times Roll,” “Rhythm Is Gonna Get You” and “Sabor de Cuba (Taste of Cuba).”
The Mixed Choir will follow with “Kyrie” from Fauré’s The Pavane, “When Rooks Fly Homeward,” “They Can’t Take That Away from Me,” “What I Did for Love” and “Sleigh Ride.”
The String Orchestra will perform four pieces: “Pizzacato Polka” by Johann and Josef Strauss, “Contrapunctus I” from The Art of Fugue by J. S. Bach, “Hungarian Dance No. 5” by Johannes Brahms and selections from Les Misérables by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg.
The Symphony Orchestra will play “The Barber of Seville Overture” by Gioacchino Rossini.
Next, three vocal ensembles will perform. A Cappella will sing “It’s Time,” Soul Sisters will perform “What Is Love” and Soul Brothers will sing “When I Was Your Man.”
The Wind Ensemble will provide the finale with “Army of the Nile,” “The Old Matador,” “First Suite in Eb” by Gustav Holst and “Suite from the Nutcracker” by Peter I. Tchaikovsky.
Winter Concert 1 will be under the direction of Michael Schwartz, performing arts department head/instrumental teacher; Mark Boschen, concert band/instrumental teacher; and Dr. Pamela Levy, vocal music teacher.
