Long Island Children’s Museum will be filling the last week of the year with plenty of family fun and celebrations. Visitors are invited to explore traditions associated with Kwanzaa, create seasonal crafts, enjoy a new take on a classic fairy tale in the LICM Theater and ring in the new year during the “noon” year’s eve celebration.
LICM’s annual New Year’s Eve party, Countdown to 12!, has become so popular that a second ball drop has been added to the celebration. Visitors will now be able to either start or end their visit to the museum with this exciting tradition. Ball drops are scheduled for noon and 4 p.m.

Siblings on a sleepover at their grandmother’s house have trouble falling asleep. To pass the time, they decide to act out their favorite story with items found in their room. Soon what’s real and what’s imagined begins to blur, and the children find themselves in the deep dark woods with a wolf tracking them down. Experience this innovative musical that offers an interactive take on a classic tale. Ages: 3 and up. Fee: $9 per seat with museum admission ($7 per seat for LICM members), $12 theater only.
Kwanzaa Celebration

Do you like week-long celebrations? Kwanzaa is the time when many African American families get together to give thanks, and to enjoy the blessings of family. Join Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and LICM and explore this unique holiday that celebrates African American culture. Learn about the rich traditions and the meaning behind Kwanzaa and make your own crafts to join in the festive fun. Ages: 3 and up. Free with museum admission but ticket required; ask at front desk for availability.
Countdown to 12!
Saturday, Dec. 31, from noon through 4 p.m.
Join the exciting New Year’s party! Celebrate the New Year in the tradition of New York’s famous Times Square-style with this ultimate family party. Begin and end the party with ball drops to ensure that everyone enjoys the experience on a schedule that matches their family’s schedule. The day will be filled with fun activities, countdown ball drops and an extreme dance party. Ring in the New Year all day long and welcome 2017. Ball drops will be held at noon and 4 p.m. All ages. Free with museum admission.
All activities will be held at the Long Island Children’s Museum, 11 Davis Ave., Garden City. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Hours: Tuesday-Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Museum admission: $13 for adults and children over 1 year old, $12 seniors, free to museum members and children under 1 year old.
