A Look At The 2017 Golden Globes

2017 Golden Globes
La La Land

Honors given out for best performances, movies and several other categories began in September with the Cannes Film Festival, Venice Film Festival and Gotham Awards.  However, most movie enthusiasts as well as Hollywood don’t feel that award season is in full swing until The Golden Globes. This show is often a predictor of who will go on to win the coveted Oscar in February.

This year the 74th Golden Globe Awards will be hosted by the talented Jimmy Fallon on Sunday, Jan. 8. Below are just a few of the nominations. For a full list, visit www.goldenglobes.com.

2017 Golden Globes
Moonlight

Moonlight has garnered six Golden Globe nominations which in addition to best movie include Best Director Barry Jenkins, Best Supporting Actor Mahershala Ali, Best Supporting Actress Naomi Harris, Best Original Score and Best Screenplay. This movie also stars Shariff Earp, Trevante Rhodes, Andre Holland, Janelle Monae and Ashton Sanders.

Based on the play In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue, written by Tarell Alvin McCraney, the movie trails a young boy named Chiron as he struggles to grow up in Miami. He is raised by an emotionally cold, abusive mom played by Naomi Harris. Bullied regularly, he is pursued into an uninhibited motel where a crack dealer, Juan (Ali) discovers him and brings him home for dinner and a safe place to sleep for the night.

As an adult, Chiron has moved outside Atlanta, and is a drug dealer similar to Juan. He faces a mother seeking forgiveness, a broken friendship and romantic feelings for a longtime friend.

2017 Golden Globes
Manchester By The Sea

Manchester by the Sea is up for five Golden Globes and besides Best Film, also is up for Best Actor Casey Affleck, Best Supporting Actress Michelle Williams, Best Director and Best Screenplay of a Motion Picture.

Lee (Casey Affleck) is an emotionally broken man, who after leaving Manchester by the Sea, resides in Massachusetts working as a janitor in several rental buildings. After receiving a call from a family friend, he rushes home to be with his brother, Joe (Kyle Chandler), who fell off his boat after a heart attack.

Unfortunately, Lee arrives to be told that Joe has died and is now tasked with telling his 16-year-old nephew, Patrick, about his father’s death. When Lee finds out that he was named Patrick’s guardian, he has mixed feelings about it, most of which surface as he remembers the death of his own three children. A film about one man’s journey at redemption and building a new relationship with his family is a must see.

If you haven’t seen any of the nominations for Best Film, this is your chance—they are all playing in theaters right now. See if you agree with the critic’s choices or have your own opinions. Either way, make sure you tune in to watch as Hollywood celebrates not only movies, but television as well.

Grab some popcorn, gather your friends and have a party watching the Globes.
