The Helen Keller National Center for Deaf-Blind Youths and Adults (HKNC) invites the members of the community to a complimentary Kick-Off Breakfast on Friday, Jan. 27, from 8:30 to 10 a.m. in the center’s headquarters at 141 Middle Neck Rd. in Sands Point. They are kicking off Helen’s Run/Walk 2017 to be held in April.
At the Kick-Off Breakfast, guests will be able to enjoy a light breakfast while they learn more about Helen’s Run/Walk 2017. The agenda will include a video of a former HKNC student who has done several Ironman competitions, and an opportunity to register (including a $5 discount for adults 19 years of age and older) as a runner/walker for the April 23 event. Special guest speaker Sara Siskind, founder of Hands on Healthy and a certified nutritional health counselor, will share her latest tips on making healthy lifestyle choices so you can feel your best every day!
If you would like to attend the Kick-Off Breakfast, contact Marina Carroll at marina.carroll@hknc.org or call 516-833-8310. The RSVP deadline is Monday, Jan. 23.
For those unable to attend the Kick-Off Breakfast, there’s always the annual Helen’s Run/Walk 2017 which takes place on April 23. This run/walk has been a regular fundraiser for HKNC since 1994 when it was a walk-only and had about 100 participants. In 2013, a run component was added to attract those who enjoyed a good 3.1-mile run on a Sunday morning. Since then, it has grown considerably and, last year, was our best attended event ever.
The 5K/3.1-mile course, officially timed by start to finish, begins in the Sands Point Preserve at 9:30 a.m. sharp; registration is from 7:45 to 9 a.m. The finish line is on the HKNC campus where there will be refreshments, an awards ceremony and an opportunity to see many of the latest adaptive technology devices and other training tools that help to level the playing field for people who are deaf-blind.
For additional information and online registration for the run/walk, go to www.helensrunwalk.kintera.org or contact Marina Carroll.
The Helen Keller National Center is regarded as a national leader in providing innovative, comprehensive vocational and independent living skills training for people who are deaf-blind in the United States. The funds raised by Helen’s Run/Walk will be used to help provide this specialized training and help ensure that all people who are deaf-blind have an equal opportunity to live, work and thrive in the community of his or her choosing. The center is most grateful for the generous support it has received from members of the community in the past and hopes that support will continue into the new year.
