The 2016-17 basketball season ended for Roslyn High School last week. But the Bulldogs went down with a fight. Playing on the road, Roslyn lost a Feb. 15 Conference A out-bracket game to Manhasset, 60-56.
After falling behind 17-11 in the first quarter, Roslyn battled back, tying Manhasset 17-17 in the second frame and rallying to bring the deficit to only two points as the fourth quarter began. Manhasset, however, held on, outscoring Roslyn 13-11 in the final frame for the win.
Eric Somer came up big for Roslyn, scoring 16 points. Jonah Tener followed with 10 points while Jake Buchbinder had eight points. Also in the scoring column was Ben Perez (8), Jared Cohen (7), Austin Reimer (4) and Tito Maldonado (2).
Roslyn went into post-season play with an impressive Feb. 11 away win at Division High School. Playing on the road, Roslyn came out smoking, outscoring Division 20-12 in the first quarter and 18-7 in the second frame. Division closed the gap slightly in the third quarter, but the Bulldogs pulled away in the final frame, outscoring Division 25-18 for the 23-point win.
As he has been all year, Jonah Tener was a force on both ends of the floor. The senior center, rounding out a great career at Roslyn, scored 14 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. Ben Perez was the leading scorer with 16 points. Jake Buchbinder (11) and Spencer Markbreiter (10) also scored in double digits as the Roslyn offense performed with its usual balance.
