A 43-year-old doctor from Mount Sinai died over the weekend after he fell from his boat into the Long Island Sound off the coast of Connecticut.

Dr. Richard Melucci, an anesthesiologist, was on the deck of his 25-foot vessel when he fell overboard just south of Charles Island near Milford, Conn. at 6 p.m. Saturday, officials said.

“The winds changed the current whatever it was on the Sound, and he was on the top deck and lost his footing,” his mother, Roseanne, told CBS New York.

The U.S. Coast Guard and Milford Fire Rescue responded to the incident. The victim’s body was recovered from the water later the same day.

His wife, who was aboard the boat at the time, was taken to a local hospital for evaluation.
