First-place winners of the annual Rondo Young Artist Vanguard Competition, an international concert showcase for 18-year-olds and under, which awards cash prizes and gives winners a taste of the professional musician’s life through touring and performing, will debut at Carnegie Hall on Friday, April 21, at 7:30 p.m. Syosset resident and H.B. Thompson Middle School student Spencer Rubin was one of the winners and will be performing Charles Colin’s “Grande Fantasie Concertante” on the oboe.
The recital, at Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall, will feature classical musicians performing works by Beethoven Paganini, Bellini, Shchedrin, Chopin, Bruch and others in piano, violin, cello and voice solos.
The competition features a series of concerts designed to give Rondo winners a chance to make music the way professional musicians do. The top winners of the competition will also take part in The Special Tour Presentation Concerts throughout the New York metropolitan area.
“[Rondo gives] so much personal attention to each participant in guiding their forming careers,” said Emilia Oskotsky, the festival’s executive director and one of its founders. “This is what makes us special and keeps students coming back year after year. We develop a long lasting relationship with them and their families, and their teachers, and have a real impact on their musical careers.”
“Rondo Young Artist gives young musicians an opportunity to perform in well known concert halls in New York City. It is very well organized competition with fair judges. I recommend it to my students and colleagues,” said Efrem Briskin, piano faculty at Manhattan School of Music, pre-college and associate college faculty division.
