The Kiwanis International Club of Manhasset Port Washington continued its mission in promoting altruistic service by raising monies through their efforts of ringing the bells during the holiday season for the Salvation Army. Club members and Key Club students were stationed at Stop & Shop in Port Washington and King Kullen in Manhasset areas ringing the bells for donations. The Kiwanis Club was able to present a check for $2,000 to Salvation Army Officer Major Doug Jones.
Early in April, the Kiwanis Club held its first annual Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast at Schrieber High School. The raffles from the event were earmarked for Port Washington Police Officer Michael McNulty who was severely injured while on duty. The Kiwanis Club, along with a matching grant from the Kiwanis Foundation, presented a check to Officer Scott Wood on behalf of the injured officer and his family. Retired New York City Detective Carl Lalena made the presentation.
A number of Port Washington Police Department personnel are members of the Kiwanis Club, including Police Commissioner Angela Lawlor Mullins and Police Chief Salerno.
The Kiwanis continues to work with the community and for children. The regular cooking of food for the Ronald McDonald House is led by Lalena and crew each month. John Lalena spoke about the Outstanding Class Achievement Award being done at Munsey Park Elementary School and the upcoming golf fundraiser to be held on July 17 at North Shore Country Club. The Kiwanis Club of Manhasset Port Washington meet regularly on every second Thursday at 12:30 p.m. at Port Washington Yacht Club for lunch and every fourth Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Manhasset Bay Yacht Club. There is a fee for the meal.
