Ewing Stockton Walker, a 1953 graduate of Great Neck High School, passed away on July 12 in Peekskill, NY, after a brief illness. He was 82.
Walker was born on April 10, 1935 in Queens and grew up in Great Neck, living for years on Gilchrist Road. He graduated from Cornell University in 1957 and worked for more than 40 years in many roles as an independent computer contractor, including at Pfizer and American Airlines.
Walker was a lifetime horse racing enthusiast and expert, owning four race horses in his life that raced in West Virginia and Maryland, and at Saratoga, Belmont and Aqueduct in New York. He was an enthusiastic bridge player, tennis and paddle player and a diligent historian, particularly with his family history that includes his great-great uncle, James K. Polk, the 11th President of the United States.
Walker is survived by his two children, Katherine Walker of Littleton, CO, and Randolph Walker of New York; sisters, Anne Walker Luther of Rockville, MD, and Jeanne Walker Schott of Westford, MA; as well as step-son, Maximilian Crisp of West Nyack, NY. He was preceded in death by his parents, Woods Stockton Walker and Margaret Ewing Walker.
A celebration of life will be held in the future in the form of a book party for the official publishing of his writings Growing Up in Great Neck, 1941-1947 that will be published by New Chapter Press, the book publishing company he co-managed with his son. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Pittsburgh, Shawmut & Northern Railroad Historical Society (PSNRRHS, PO Box 222, Angelica, NY 14709), honoring the rail service that brought him in his youth from New York to Olean, NY, where his mother Margaret Ewing Walker and her side of his family lived and enjoyed summers on nearby Cuba Lake.
