Senator Elaine Phillips secured $49,000 in state funding for the Community Organization for Parents and Youth (COPAY), which provides professional and culturally aware substance abuse treatment and care for those with mental health and relationship issues.
COPAY is an outpatient nonprofit agency dedicated to providing high-quality, professional, medically managed service to families and individuals, including substance-abuse education and counseling, family therapy, marital counseling, vocational assessment and training, academic tutoring, HIV supportive services, psychiatric evaluation, parenting-skills training, information and referrals.
“Organizations like COPAY that dedicate their time and resources to the well-being of local children are the foundation of our community,” said Phillips. “This funding will assist COPAY in expanding their prevention programs that help keep children and adults on a successful path in life.”
Phillips recently attended the organization’s Kids Helping Kids moving-up ceremony and honored the children for their hard work. Children in the program were recognized for their summer participation and the counselors and counselors-in-training were honored for their dedication and work.
“These programs are made possible by the counselors who dedicate time and effort because they care about putting children on the right path to succeed in life,” Phillips said. “It’s wonderful that many of the counselors have gone through the program and they have the ability to teach their campers what they have learned.”
COPAY will use the funding to expand its prevention services for young children, middle and high school students and adults.
“We are so grateful that Senator Phillips is providing to the agency,” said Executive Director Maria Cuadra. “We hope to increase the number of children and families that we provide services for in order to help them be successful in their community.”
