Twenty Great Neck Public School students were selected for the 2017–18 Long Island String Festival Association (LISFA) Orchestras, Intermediate Division (grades 5, 6 and 7–8), which will bring together Long Island’s highly talented young string musicians in March 2018.
The LISFA Intermediate Festival grades 6–8 participants from North Middle School are violinists Julia Huang, Jason Mei and David Zeng, and violist Alex Sun. Participants from South Middle School are violinists Laura An, Deirdre Chan, Tiffany Chen, Bethany Cho, Drew Kim, Elizabeth Levine, Josephine Soong, Jansen Wong, Joy Yang and Richard Zhuang; and violists Sebastian Lennox and Dana Siong Sin.
Grade 5 participants are violinists Kattie Huang and Alston Leung, and violist Lauren Siong Sin, from Baker School; and violinist Samuel Fisk from Lakeville School.
Grace Luo, a freshman at South High originally selected as a Long Island String Festival Association (LISFA) alternate, has been placed into the LISFA orchestra, Secondary Division, grades 9–10. She will play violin II. Luo will be joining previously announced South High grade 9–10 participants, violinists Jaehyn Kim, Oliver Lee, Eujin Ra, Mia Wang and Ann Zhang. South High LISFA participants are taught by Michael Schwartz, performing arts department head/director of instrumental music.
Students are selected for the LISFA Orchestra based on their level and score at the NYSSMA (New York State School Music Association) Festival held last year. These students must also participate in their school orchestra, and help inspire all students in the district’s instrumental music program.
LISFA participants are taught by Matthew Trinkwald at North Middle; Alan Schwartz at South Middle; Anne Fogarty at Baker; and Juan Garcia at Lakeville.
