Boy Scout Troop 298 of New Hyde Park has closed out another exciting, adventures and successful year. Established in 1947, the Troop has grown to 45 Scouts. The Troop, led by Scouts Greg Burger, Senior Patrol Leader and Michael Sokol and Chris Joseph, Assistant Senior Patrol Leaders, started 2017 with its Annual Ski Trip to Windham Mountain and Pancake Breakfast…and never stopped.
This year the Troop recorded more than 100 hours in community service, helping the Village of New Hyde Park, Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Clark Botanical Gardens and numerous other organizations.
This past December the Troop held its Holiday Court of Honor. From June to December, Scouts earned more than 183 Merit Badges and had 24 Rank Advancements, a record for the Troop.
In July, 42 Scouts attend summer camp at Tri-mount in the Catskills and a few other Scouts attended Onteora Scout Reservation in Livingston Manor in upstate New York. The Scouts worked on their scouting and leadership skills by participating in numerous scouting activities and merit badge courses.
In August, the Troop sent three crews to Sea Base High Adventure in Key West, FL. Scouts went deep see fishing, snorkeling, sailing and camped on a barrier island. While at Sea Base, the Troop won multiple awards.
The Troop is not short of Eagles either. James Garvin achieved the Rank of Eagle making him the Troops 72nd Eagle Scout.
Garvin’s Eagle marks the 12th year in a row where the Troop has had at least one Scout achieve the Rank of Eagle.
Another calendar-packed adventurous and exciting year is starting again with an annual Ski Trip and the Troop 298 Pancake Breakfast.
The breakfast will be held on Sunday, Jan. 28, at Holy Spirit Church’s cafeteria, starting at 9 a.m. The event is open to the public.
