New year, but the problem remains the same. It is 2018 and it is still not safe to leave your vehicles unlocked in your own driveway.
Nassau County Police Department’s Third Squad has reported the details of multiple larcenies that occurred between 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 13, and 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 14, in New Hyde Park.
According to detectives, an unknown person entered a gray Ford suburban on Campbell Street and removed unknown currency from the vehicle. The subject fled in an unknown direction. The subject is also believed to have committed larcenies to the following vehicles at the following locations:
• Gray 4-door BMW on Campbell Street; unknown currency taken.
• Blue 4-door Hyundai on Campbell Street; unknown currency taken.
• Gray 4-door Nissan on Tulip Lane; unknown currency taken.
The incidents are still under investigation.
“One of the big things we have going on in New Hyde Park, as well as other parts of the precinct and county-wide, is larcenies from autos; people stealing stuff from your car,” said Nassau County Third Precinct Problem-Oriented Policing (POP) Officer Todd Atkin at a recent public board meeting where he addressed the board and village residents.
Most larcenies committed in driveways are easy for a criminal to commit because vehicles are left unlocked.
“Cars at the mall are usually locked, but have their windows smashed because someone leaves a Louis Vuitton on the dashboard,” said Atkin.
Atkin said his top tips for avoiding becoming a victim of these types of larcenies include:
• If you have something of value, put it in the trunk
• Park under a street light, no matter what time of day or night
• Have you keys in your hand before you arrive at your car
• Make sure valuables are stowed, not visible to someone passing by
• Lock your vehicle
Atkin said on some nights, the precinct receives 10-12 reports of vehicle larcenies.
