Scouts Earn Silver

Allison Corcoran, Amanda Joa and Gabrielle Petriello from Cadette Troop 1402 in New Hyde Park received their Girl Scout Silver Award at a ceremony on June 11 at the Elks Lodge in New Hyde Park. At the ceremony they were also presented with certificates of recognition from New Hyde Park Mayor Lawrence Montreuil and North Hempstead Town Councilman Angelo Ferrara.

The Scouts’ Silver Award project involved helping out the residents at the Atria Assisted Living in Great Neck. In the project they made mini biographies for the residents so caregivers can know more about them and so they can get to know the others living at the Atria.

They went to the Atria for four sessions and helped 22 residents make unique biographies. The girls used laptops, iPads and a printer to create the biographies and inserted them in acrylic frames for display in the residents’ rooms.

The Scouts also made kits at the end of the project so that in the future any new resident who moved into the Atria could make their own mini biography. The kits consisted of pens, a template for the mini biography, instructions and an acrylic frame.
