The decision to leave your home and continue life in a new place is never easy, but one facility on Long Island surpasses what people think the term “assisted living” means.
“It’s wonderful for our residents to age in a place with different levels of care,” said Beth Evans, executive director at The Regency at Glen Cove Assisted Living.
At up to 100 residents, The Regency at Glen Cove Assisted Living is currently undergoing construction. While many areas like the common spaces are completed, there will also be a bistro, theater and unique memory care wing.
What is your role at The Regency?
I have been here for 22 years. I oversee everything from beginning to end; budget, staffing, programs, tending resident’s individual needs, the ongoing construction and expansion, design and programming.
Why should someone consider moving to an assisted living home?
Many people think that living at home is a benefit for some, which it is. But what is so special for assisted living is the socialization. You are never alone and it’s a very secure feeling to know that staff is available and there when you need them. Also, everything is available at your fingertips from activities to doctors and x-rays. You also never have to worry about shopping, cooking and cleaning.
In your opinion, what does The Regency offer that other assisted living homes do not?
Our warmth and feeling when you come to The Regency. We’re like a family; the tenure of our staff, some have been here for 20 years or more and we really personalize everyone’s needs. It’s a very close knit community and we get to know our residents’ families as well. We care for both mental and physical health and we’re really on top of everything.
What programs do you have?
We have a lot of educational programs and what we call Regency University. We also have wonderful entertainers, yoga and Pilates classes, music and entertainment as well as integrated programs when youth come to visit our senior center.
Are there any special events or plans in place to mark the 25th anniversary?
This past June we had a big party, but we are waiting for construction to be finalized in early spring before we have a larger celebration. We are being honored from the Long Island Alzheimer’s Foundation as well. We’re not part of a big corporation, but we still provide the highest quality of care. We are very proud to have been so well known by everyone.
