Eileen Rochlin Mehlman, formerly of Port Washington, died peacefully on Nov. 2, in Encinitas, CA surrounded by her family.
Raised in Laurelton, the family spent summers in upstate NY at Camp Olympus where her father was the head counselor. That is where Eileen developed her love of sports and being a team player.
She attended Far Rockaway HS and went on to City College of NY where she met the love of her life, Sheldon whom she referred to as “The Best”.
They were married in 1955 and began their business partnership in 1957 as owners of Scandanavian Design and then Cow Neck Bay Company until 1995, both located on Main Street in Port.
Eileen knew all of her customers and their families. She would always lend a sympathetic ear and offered her expert advice on finding the perfect gift.
After retiring in 1996, and moving to Boynton Beach, FL, Eileen enjoyed tennis, bowling, gardening, reading and long walks. She also loved spending summers at their home in the mountains in upstate NY.
Eileen fought a hard battle with Alzheimer’s over her last years.
She is survived by her beloved husband Sheldon, loving daughters and their husbands, Susan Finger Cohen (Michael) of Juno Beach, FL. and Tammy Gillies (David) of Encinitas, CA, and grandchildren; Adam, Heather, Jacqueline & Kyle.
Eileen and Shelly had a true love story. Services were held in Woodbury and interment was at Mt. Hebron Cemetery in Queens, NY on Nov 6th which would have been Eileen & Shelly’s 63rd wedding anniversary.
Eileen exemplified the true meaning of family. She was kind, caring and always there when you needed her. She will be greatly missed by all who knew & loved her.
