North High Table Tennis Team Triumphs

By Timothy Lee

The Great Neck North High School Table Tennis team started the season with a resounding 6-0, 6-0 two-match win against Syosset High School, competing in both singles and doubles games, on Jan. 4. The formidable Syosset six-member team consisted of two high-level players with ratings of 2,000.

North High also beat Herricks High School on Jan. 14, sweeping with two more sets of 6-0, 6-0.

The North Table Tennis team went on to defeat Roslyn on Feb. 8 and Great Neck South and St. Mary’s on Feb. 13.

Through specific drills and games, North High team members, Kelly Liang, Timothy Lee, Victor Chen, Ryan Chen, Kenneth Li and Kelvin Xiao, practice every day to perfect all three main table tennis skills: forehand, backhand and service game.

After months of training, North High met its competitors with confidence. Last year, the team’s hard work paid off, as it won the first Long Island Championship without losing a match. The team hopes to replicate the same success this year.

The top two teams from the Long Island will head to the championship games at Horace Mann High School in Manhattan on March 2. North High has secured its seat and teammates are looking forward to competing against teams from Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens during the official league championship.

Timothy Lee is captain of the Great Neck North High School Table Tennis team.
