Letter: Beating Cancer Is In Our Blood

LTRCancerAWe are writing to members of our community on behalf of Clean Up the MES, a determined group of 25 students from Great Neck North High School that has focused its efforts on the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS).

LLS is a nonprofit organization with the mission of curing leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improving the quality of life of patients and their families. The organization is dedicated to investing in cutting-edge research, while also providing support services and financial assistance to those in need.

Since it was formed in 1949, LLS has invested more than $1.2 billion in cancer research, distributed more than $323 million in financial assistance and has funded more than 250 research grants around the globe.

Every three minutes someone is diagnosed with a form of blood cancer. Clean Up the MES’s goal is to raise a minimum of $35,000 to fund groundbreaking research and, ultimately, beat cancer once and for all.

Clean Up the MES was coordinated by LLS’s Students of the Year, a seven-week philanthropic opportunity for young individuals. The Clean Up the MES team is comprised of high school students, many of whom are athletes, mathletes, student-body officers, school newspaper staff members, Model UN delegates and more.

In the coming weeks, Clean Up the MES will host its first fundraisers for LLS, which has a special place in these students’ hearts, as the coordinators are campaigning in honor of their grandparents and families who have experienced the fight firsthand.

LLS has funded 19 of the 21 blood-cancer treatments approved by the FDA in the last year, but the organization knows there is still more to do. More than 1.2 million people are living with blood cancers, and LLS is determined to make that number zero. LLS has more than 100,000 volunteers who are not only doing research, but also helping patients through their respective journeys.

This is why we need your help to make a difference in the lives of our loved ones. To donate to LLS on behalf of Clean Up the MES, visit https://events.lls.org/li/longislandSOY19/tcleanupth.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to all our sponsors and supporters. LLS is dependent on your generosity and goodwill in order to continue providing care for patients around the world.

Every donation helps, and a share on Facebook can go a long way. Thank you in advance for your consideration and support.
