A compassionate group of Great Neck women packed 80 bags of kosher for Passover food for needy families in the community on Tuesday, April 9.

The food was provided by the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty, a UJA partner through the digital food pantry at Commonpoint Queens, which is composed of the Central Queens Y and the Samuel Field Y, where the packages were assembled.

Each bag of food included poultry, eggs, tuna, grape juice, apples, five pounds of matzah, potatoes, mushrooms, tomato sauce, peaches, jam, ketchup, mayonnaise, macaroons, onions and carrots.

“For the first time, the digital food pantry at Commonpoint Queens, one of UJA’s partners, provided kosher for Passover food for 80 families in the Great Neck community,” said Bari A. Ziegel, senior development executive at UJA-Federation of New York. “A group of volunteers did a ‘sort and assembly’ of the food at the Y and then delivered it to key locations in Great Neck, so that it could be distributed that day.”

The pilot program with the Commonpoint Queens Digital Food Pantry was spearheaded by a dedicated group of community leaders, including Tannaz Dror, Shilla Eshaghoff, Janet Hakimian, Shirin Moinian, Adina Ostad, Yas Rokhsar and Ferry Sedaghatpour.

Within the next few months, Commonpoint Queens Digital Food Pantry will have a kiosk at the Samuel Field Y location, so families can place orders for food online either remotely or at the Little Neck location, where they can pick it up.
