Vacations have ended and Labor Day is over. If you’re already exhausted from school supply shopping, buying new clothes and loading up on your kids’ favorite snacks, September is the perfect time to take a breather and see one of the many new movies being released. The following are just a few of the previews so check your local movie listings because September has an abundance of new ones coming your way.
Downton Abbey (PG)
Bowing into theaters on Sept. 20 is Downton Abbey as the story of the Crawley family continues. From the television series that ran from 2010–2015 to the silver screen and with the exception of Lily James (Lady Rose) and Ed Speleers (Jimmy Kent), the original cast including Joanne Froggatt, Matthew Goode, Michelle Dockery and Maggie Smith reprise their roles depicting wealthy estate owners in the countryside of England. This time, the family receives a royal visit by King George V and Queen Mary. Fans of the television series will be flocking to see this new movie.
IT Chapter 2 (R)
Sept. 6 brings the long-awaited sequel of everyone’s favorite clown movie into theaters. Directed by Andy Muschietti, this movie is a direct sequel from the blockbuster 2017 movie based on the 1986 novel by Stephen King. Set in 2016 (27 years later from the occurrences in the first movie), the friends must reunite in their hometown of Derry to defeat the more powerful than ever Pennywise, the dancing clown. The original young cast from the first movie reprise their roles in flashbacks with Bill Skarsgård reprising his terrifying role of Pennywise. James McAvoy, Jessica Chastain, Bill Hader, Isaiah Mustafa, Jay Ryan, James Ransone and Andy Bean star as the now adults facing the clown. A must-see for horror fans and Stephen King fans. Not suitable for young kids.
Rambo: Last Blood (R)
Sylvester Stallone reprises his role in Rambo: Last Blood on Sept. 20. When his friend’s daughter is kidnapped, Vietnam War veteran John Rambo crosses the U.S.-Mexico border to bring her home, but finds himself up against one of Mexico’s most ruthless cartels. The action-thriller is directed by Adrian Grunberg and co-written by Stallone. The film also stars Paz Vega, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, Yvette Monreal and Adriana Barraza.
The Goldfinch (R)
On Sept, 13, The Goldfinch debuts in theaters, directed by John Crowley. The films stars Nicole Kidman, Finn Wolfhard, Sarah Paulson and Ansel Elgort. Based on the novel of the same name, the film follows a 13-year-old boy whose life changes forever when his mother is killed at the Museum of Modern Art in a terrorist attack. Mourning at the scene in the rubble, he makes a split decision and steals a piece of priceless art known as the “The Goldfinch.” A good thriller to make you escape for a few hours.
Hustlers (R)
It’s an all-star female cast in Hustlers, debuting Sept. 13. Directed by Lorene Scafaria, the cast includes Jennifer Lopez, Lili Reinhart, Constance Wu, Cardi B, Julia Stiles, Usher and Keke Palmer. Inspired by a New York Magazine article, former strip club employees band together to turn the tables on their Wall Street clients. Lopez stars as Ramona Vega, a veteran stripper who mentors Destiny (Constance Wu), and helps set up her scam as a means of supporting herself and other strippers who’ve fallen on hard times.
The Day Shall Come (NR)
On Sept. 27, The Day Shall Come debuts, directed by Christopher Morris. The British-American satirical black comedy thriller film, stars Anna Kendrick, Jim Gaffigan, Kayvan Novak and Danielle Brooks. A short comedy that packs in the laughs as the movie follows an indigent preacher trying to fix the Miami projects when he accepts cash to save his own family from being kicked out of their home. However, he is unaware that his sponsor is working for the FBI and has plans to make him a criminal by endorsing his insane revolutionary dreams.
