Local Junior Golfers Advance To Championship

The Suffolk D4 All-Stars, who are based out of Bethpage State Park in Farmingdale, won the PGA Junior League Regional at Seaview Golf Club in Galloway, NJ to advance to the PGA Junior League Championship at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, AZ. The championship will be held from Friday, Oct. 11 to Monday, Oct. 14.

The young squad, led by Captain Kelley Brooke of the LPGA, finished with a 3-0 record at the Sept. 14 regional. They defeated the Del Val All-Stars 7-5, followed by Syracuse East All-Stars 9-3 and the Penn State All-Stars 8.5-3.5. In total, they racked up 24.5 points for the day.

When they head to Arizona, they will play under a new name of “Team New York” as they will play junior teams from throughout the country, representing different states. They will compete with teams from around the U.S. such as Texas, Washington, Illinois, Ohio, California, Georgia, Minnesota, Oklahoma and Connecticut.

The team is made up of 10 golfers that range in age from 10 to 14. All players competed with Bethpage State Park Golf Course during the spring and summer seasons as the facility hosted its own league. They include Catherine Andino of Port Washington, Matthew DiFiore of Malverne, Bryan Zhao of Jericho, Emerson Stumpf of Plainview, Spencer Cohen of Roslyn Heights, Ryan Nicholson of Smithtown, Joseph Dolezal of Old Westbury, Cavan Mahler of Sayville, Ayan Sheikh of Commack and Austin Barrett of Farmingville.
