This is the time of year when we’d typically be shaking off any remaining feelings of winter hibernation by getting up and out of the house to enjoy the weather. The coronavirus pandemic has thrown a monkey wrench in that plan, but there are still plenty of springtime activities that will have you making the most of isolation.
Reorganize
As happiness expert and author Gretchen Rubin writes in her latest book Outer Order Inner Calm, organization can make our lives happier, healthier, more productive and more creative. Carve out a couple of hours to clear out a disorganized space. You’ll feel more zen after.
Get Gardening
Bring your garden back to life after winter. Maura Brush, director of horticulture at Old Westbury Gardens, suggests this simple step to get growing: Use the “Three D’” as a guide. Anything that is diseased, damaged or dead should be cut out. Read more of her expert tips here.
Take A Hike
Warmer weather practically begs lacing up hiking boots for a scenic stroll. Luckily, there are plenty of trails to choose from right in our own backyard. While keeping a safe six-foot distance from others and wearing a mask, visit any of the 10 nature preserves maintained by the alliance that are currently open to the public. Visit www.northshorelandalliance.org for a list of outdoor spaces.
Spruce Up Your Resume
Whether you’re looking to get out of your current job or are looking for a side hustle, spring is a great time to ready your resume. According to job-hunting website Glassdoor, March, April and May are historically good months to revise your resume, so don’t let the pandemic slow you down. With job outlooks less than ideal, it’s a good idea to get a jump start by updating your resume with your most current and applicable skills (be sure to include telecommuting technology you are well-versed in).

See Oscar-Winning Movies
April showers bring an opportunity to check out all the great films you may have missed. Snuggle up inside with Oscar award-winning flicks that will get you through those rainy days.
Let In Fresh Air
There is something so freeing about opening your windows. On the first nice day, unseal your window sills and let the spring breeze breathe freshing into your home.
Help The Community
The community has stepped up in so many ways to help during these times of crisis. If you have the means, purchase a gift card from your favorite local business to keep them afloat. And visit www.longislandweekly.com to find out how to donate blood and food to those in need.
Connect From Afar
Employ digital social platforms, such as FaceTime, Zoom, Google Hangouts or Skype to host a “social distanced” happy hour with friends.
Digital Equine Therapy
If you can’t visit local Long Island Farms, let them come to you. Spirit’s Promise Rescue in Riverhead is hosting a Virtual Support Group and Farm Animal and Nature Virtual Classroom via Zoom beginning Wednesday, April 22. The Virtual Support Group for adults will be held every Wednesday from 11 to 11:50 a.m. and the Farm Animal and Nature Virtual Classroom for kids will be held from 12 to 12:30 p.m. Children will digitally visit the farm animals and learn about their traits and care. Both programs are free and will be hosted by Equus Life Coach, Marisa Striano. Those interested may register by visiting https://bit.ly/2yb4fn8.
