The Sunrise Detachment Marine Corps League celebrated the 246th Birthday of the United States Marine Corps in grand fashion on Nov. 7. The event was held at Captain Bills Restaurant and catering in Bay Shore and was attended by more than 230 Marines and guests.

The League presented its Marine of the Year award to Past Commandant Edward Baulch for his leadership during the COVID pandemic.

The guest of honor for this years ball was Lance Corporal Matias Ferreria a Purple Heart recipient as a result of his injuries suffered in 2011 in Afghanistan. Ferreria is also the first double amputee to become an active duty police officer.

The League’s oldest Marine is Corporal Cliff Doering, a survivor of the Battle on Okinawa. Doering is 96 years young.

The League’s youngest Marine is 25-year-old, Lance Corporal Carlos E. Garcia who graduated from Marine Corps Boot Camp Parris Island in May 2020.

The League also announced the initiation of the Gerard J. Rogers/Sunrise Detachment Scholarship Fund. This scholarship will be awarded annually to detachment family members for use for college. This fund was established by a generous donation from the Rogers family in memoriam.
