An eagerly anticipated solar eclipse is approaching on April 8, and Long Island has geared up for an unforgettable event.

With the eclipse happening between 2- 4 p.m., peaking at approximately 3:30 p.m. with 85-90% visibility in Nassau and Suffolk counties, Long Island is in for a rare celestial treat of a crescent sun for those not driving upstate to see the total eclipse.

From preparation to community gatherings and special viewing events, Long Island offers a range of opportunities to witness this once-and-a-lifetime spectacle that marks the first total solar eclipse in New York State since 1925.

VIEWING AT LONG ISLAND EXPLORIUM

Learn about the fascinating science behind solar eclipses through exciting hands-on activities, followed by the opportunity to witness the extraordinary event firsthand while wearing your provided safety glasses. VIEWING PARTY AT CRADLE OF AVIATION MUSEUM

Enjoy free certified solar eclipse glasses and engage in hands-on STEM activities included with museum admission. Families can delve into eclipse talks and learning opportunities, while also getting creative with crafting pinhole projectors and more interactive experiences for all ages. Come together with your local community and gather on the library lawn for an unforgettable viewing experience of the stunning eclipse, complete with your complimentary safety glasses. Come to this free community event where everyone, regardless of age, is invited to witness the rare eclipse. VIEWING AT HECKSCHER STATE PARK

Partnering with Stony Brook University’s Geosciences and Astronomy departments, environmental educators, professors, and graduate students will enrich your eclipse experience with insightful discussions about the science behind the eclipse as it’s happening. Also partnering with Stony Brook University’s Geosciences and Astronomy departments, your eclipse experience will be enhanced through informative discussions about the science happening before your eyes.
