Matthew George, a resident of Mineola has been nominated to run as a Councilman for District 3 of North Hempstead by the Nassau County Democratic Party during their convention at the Cradle of Aviation Museum. The third Council District encompasses Garden City Park, Mineola, Villages of Williston Park and New Hyde Park.
George holds a graduate degree in chemistry, a Master of Science Education degree from New York University and a Master of Education degree from Teachers College, Columbia University. George started as a teacher and is currently working as an Assistant Principal in a high school.
George has experiences as a research scholar at the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University and as a teacher research associate at Brookhaven National Laboratory. As an educator, he made substantial contributions to science education through professional development for teachers.
As a community leader, George has been working with youth and young adults for over 30 years. He has helped hundreds of troubled youths to graduate from high school by providing them with the necessary support.
George promoted the “College Now” program of CUNY in two high schools so that students can earn college credits in high school. Understanding the value of citizens’ responsibility for the environment, George promoted another program called “Trout in the Classroom”, where students raised trout from eggs to fingerlings, then released them in streams in the Catskill area. The program educates school kids about the New York State water supply systems and the importance of conservation. George has been involved with environmental groups such as Eco-Justice.
George and his wife of 33 years, Rachel are happily married and have three beautiful daughters, two sons-in-law and one grandson. The couple is actively involved with their church. George was the Coordinator of the North East Regional Sunday Schools for nine years and was the Diocesan Assembly member of his church. During his tenure he helped to introduce many changes in the Sunday School organization which are being followed today in the Diocese of North America and Europe.
As a councilman, George has said he will maintain strong finance for the town, make the environment one of the priorities, initiate and develop new training programs to prepare the young adults for next generation jobs and promote accountability and transparency at government level.
