Garden City’s First Annual Restaurant Week
I am pleased to report that restaurant week was a successful week as a result of the Chamber of Commerce’s efforts for the first annual event and the success of their Friday evening program in which “eateries” offered food outside of their establishments. Judging by the crowd, it was evident how much it was enjoyed by all.
Thanks to the Chamber of Commerce, all of the participants of this event and the village’s various departments who helped make this run so smoothly.
Outdoor Dining: A Big Hit
It is wonderful to see so many Garden City residents as well as visitors to our village enjoying alfresco dining on New Hyde Park Road, Franklin Avenue and Seventh Street. The village piloted alfresco dining in the summer of 1996. The Chamber of Commerce supported outdoor dining as a strategy to encourage shopping in Garden City. They asked the village to change its code to allow outdoor dining by permit, which the village did on May 15, 1997. For the past 12 years the number of businesses providing this feature continues to grow. This year there are over 25 businesses who have permits. There is no doubt that alfresco dining is an overwhelming success. I encourage residents to come early and combine shopping with dining outside at their favorite place.
Concert at the Gazebo
Once again, compliments are due to the Recreation Department for arranging the 2009 season’s outstanding Concert Series at the Village gazebo, located on the Village Green at the corner of Stewart and Hilton avenues.
This week’s program is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 6 and will feature Emil Stuccio and the Classics.
The program will begin at 7:15 p.m. and admission is free. Please bring your lawn chair or blanket and enjoy a very pleasant evening. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be held at the Cultural and Performing Arts Center at Cluett Hall at the St. Paul’s School. Please contact the Recreation Department at 465-4075 with questions pertaining to the concert.
Board of Trustees Summer Meeting Schedule – Public Hearings
During August, the board of trustees will meet only once. The next regularly scheduled meeting will be held on Thursday, Aug. 13 at 8 p.m. There will be seven public hearings at the Aug. 13 board of trustees meeting on the following proposed local laws:
A Local Law to amend the Code of the Village of Garden City with regard to Reimbursements and Fees for Emergency Response Actions.
A Local Law to amend the Code of the Village of Garden City with regard to Administrative Fees for Impoundment and Redemption.
A Local Law to amend the Code of the Village of Garden City with regard to Dimensions and Weights of Vehicles.
A Local Law to amend the Code of the Village of Garden City with regard to Alarm Systems.
A Local Law to amend the Code of the Village of Garden City with regard to Special Sanitation Fees for Excess Accumulation of Waste.
A Local Law to amend the Code of the Village of Garden City with regard to Repair and Maintenance of Sidewalks and Curbs.
A Local Law to amend the Code of the Village of Garden City, to Establish Residence R-20C Corner Overlay Districts.
