Can two ex-vaudevillians reunite for one last show without driving each other crazy? Cantankerous Willie Clark and sometimes befuddled Al Lewis are like an AARP version of Simon’s Felix and Oscar from The Odd Couple, constantly at odds with one another when they agree to perform together for the first time in 11 years. Simon’s brilliant wit is apparent in every line, which makes for continuous laughter though not without a few poignant moments sprinkled in as well. Parents of girls ages 5 to 17, who want to learn more about Girl Scouting, should attend this open house. Parents will learn about upcoming programs and the different activities Girl Scouts participate in to receive their badges. Come and meet the Girl Scouts of Nassau County staff, learn about the new Girl Scout grade levels and optional “pathways” for girls that would like to participate without being in a troop. Award-Winning Acting Studio For Kids/Teens
A Class Act NY’s award-winning Manhattan-based acting studio for kids and teens still has a few spaces left in its One-Week Broadway Camp (Aug. 24 through Aug. 28) at the Sid Jacobson in Roslyn. Kids work with Broadway actors all week long in one-hour workshops. When kids aren’t in a workshop, they are rehearsing for their Final Showcase in which they make Off-Broadway debut at the JCC’s own theatre. Campers are bused to and from Manhattan on Wednesday to see a Broadway matinee in which they have a talk back with actors from the show. Ages: 7 to 16 (two groups split up according to age). Volunteers Needed
The Mill Neck Family of Organizations is seeking volunteers to work at food sales, children’s activities, apple booths and more during the Fall Harvest Festival to be held on Oct. 10 and 11. The outdoor festival, known as “Apple Sale,” features a wide variety of apples and seasonable produce, craft items, a Cheese House, deaf specialty items and much more. Volunteer support from local civic and church groups, students, alumni, staff, parents and faithful supporters, have made this a special and memorable event. Volunteers can work from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., 12:30 to 5 p.m. or all day. Food tickets will be provided for all volunteers who work four or more hours. This year, the Mill Neck Family will host a “Kick-Off Breakfast for Volunteers” on Oct. 3 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Deaf Education Center. Open to all 2009 volunteers ages 16 and over, the event will feature a delicious continental breakfast, an orientation and a long-time volunteer recognition ceremony. Have a fond Fall Harvest Memory? Freeport H.S. Class of 1959 50th Reunion
Member of the Freeport High School Class of 1959 have planned a gala weekend to celebrate their 50-year reunion from Sept. 11 to 13. Begins Friday night with a meeting at E.B. Elliot’s on the Nautical Mile to renew old acquaintances. Saturday will find the group at Jones Beach Field 6 or at Museum Row riding Nunley’s Carousel once more, in the bleachers at the Freeport vs. Oceanside football game or just riding around the village visiting old haunts. At 7 p.m. converge at the Freeport Yacht Club for dinner and enjoyment of music of the ‘50s. Before starting home on Sunday, groups will meet at local diners for farewells over brunch. •Free/Low Cost Health Insurance. The residents of communities served by Mercy Medical Center will have the opportunity to apply for free or low cost health insurance for children, families and adults up to age 64 on the first Thursday of every month from 5 to 7 p.m. in Mercy’s Main Lobby. Staff from Catholic Charities of LI will assist you and our children applying for Child Health Plus, Family Health Plus and Medicaid Health Insurance Programs. The bi-lingual enrollers will screen adults for income eligibility for the state’s health insurance program Family Health Plus. Children are eligible for Child Health Plus. These programs cover medical check-ups, hospitalization, emergency care, prescriptions, vision and dental care.
