Dems Tap NC Human Rights Commissioner
Carrie Solages, a resident of Elmont has announced that he is running for Nassau County Clerk on the Democratic ticket. Solages is Commissioner of the Nassau County Commission on Human Rights, an attorney, a community organizer, and a lifelong resident of Nassau County. He also states he is a journalist, having written for People magazine and the NAACP publication Crisis Management.
Solages’ states his vision of reform includes “fiscal responsibility, transparency, and efficiency to make the Office of the Nassau County Clerk accountable to Nassau taxpayers.”
While attending Georgetown University, Solages began his work in local government as an intern for the Nassau County Legislature. After he earned his J.D. from Boston College Law School, he served as an Assistant
District Attorney in the Bronx. Subsequently, he went on to become a partner at the law firm of Solages & Solages, P.C.
In 2007, County Executive Suozzi appointed Solages to serve as a Commissioner of the Nassau County Commission on Human Rights. The Commission processes various forms of discrimination complaints and develops programs that address these injustices through education and awareness. Solages is also the Secretary for the Elmont Coalition for Sustainable Development, a grass-roots organization that focuses on revitalizing the community’s economically-depressed areas. Solages states that he brings his legal perspective to the efforts of the Coalition to ensure the group’s success.
A press release from Solages stated, “The County Clerk is required to serve all Nassau residents and businesses in three general areas: real estate, legal and licensing. In addition to duties legally enumerated by the New York State Constitution and County Charter, the County Clerk has a duty to be accountable to the individuals it serves.” He said he “will fulfill this duty by increasing the office’s visibility and the public’s awareness of the services it has to offer. It is the right of every Nassau resident to access information in the possession of the County Clerk and to do so in a timely manner. With the implementation of modern managerial and technological improvements to address waste and mismanagement” Solages said he is focused on empowering homeowners, businesses, and all working people by offering easy access to information and emphasizing taxpayer savings.
