Division 1 College Soccer Teams to Square Off August 25

St. John’s to Take on Hofstra at John J. Burns Park

The Town of Oyster Bay will host the Supervisor’s Challenge, a NCAA Division 1 College Soccer Showdown, at John J. Burns Town Park on Merrick Road in Massapequa on Tuesday, Aug. 25 at 7 p.m. The contest, featuring NCAA powers St. John’s University and Hofstra University, will showcase some of the area’s best soccer talent. Admission is free.

The sport of soccer, one of Long Island’s most popular youth participation activities, represents a large network of caring people,” said Supervisor John Venditto. “This game coming to the town represents the widespread appeal of the sport. It should be very popular with local residents who enjoy seeing soccer played at a very high level.”

According to Venditto, the collegiate game will also serve as a fine example for the Town’s young soccer players, who can one day aspire to further their education through athletics. “These Division I programs offer youngsters excellent academic and athletic opportunities.” He said. “We’re proud to host and support this event, which not only provides a healthy outlet for participants, but will entertain sports fans from all over the town.”

Venditto also commended the staff of the town’s Parks Department for their ongoing efforts to maintain the town’s outstanding parks and facilities. “It’s no secret in the local sports community that the town’s fields are among the finest in the nation,” said the supervisor. “The fact that Hofstra and St. John’s are playing on them is testament to that fact. I feel it is truly a compliment when NCAA Division 1 athletic programs play on our facility. They feature some of the finest athletes in the country.”

Venditto said he is looking forward to the Supervisor’s Challenge on Aug. 25. “It will be an outstanding event and I’m proud to be hosting them here in the Town of Oyster Bay,” he said. “I hope the residents will come out and support these two outstanding schools.”
