Announces Recovery Funds for
New Energy Efficient Traffic Signals
Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy announced the release of $4.3 million of federal funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to upgrade approximately 900 traffic signals on Long Island by replacing existing incandescent lights with more energy efficient Light Emitting Diode (LED) bulbs to reduce energy use and improve the environment. The project includes installing approximately 250 pedestrian countdown crossing signals at key intersections to improve pedestrian safety.
“These funds will help to improve traffic safety by providing for the installation of new traffic lights, while making Long Island more energy efficient,” McCarthy said. “This project is a clear example of the American Recovery and Reinvestment act putting Long Islanders to work and making vital improvements to our infrastructure.”
LED bulbs produce brighter light, and last longer than traditional incandescent bulbs; the longer-lasting bulbs mean fewer replacements and burnouts, improving safety for both traffic and pedestrians. These improvements will help create jobs on Long Island, and will help lower the long-term energy costs of the municipalities.
