Central Oyster Bay Democratic Club

At its meeting of the club is sponsoring a Volunteer Recognition Night. This will give recognition to new volunteers and to those who have volunteered in previous campaigns. The meeting will be held at the Nutty Irishman, 3223 Main St., at 7:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

The Institute for Learning in Retirement is an educational program for mature learners on the campus of Farmingdale State College which is designed to provide lifelong learning experiences. Farmingdale Remembers

The Farmingdale Community Summit Council invites all members of the community to the annual Farmingdale Remembers ceremony, which will be held at 6 p.m. at the 9/11 Memorial at the Farmingdale Library, 116 Merritts Rd. Farmingdale Remembers is the summit’s annual observance commemorating the events of September 11, 2001. The Summit urges all residents of the community to participate in the brief ceremony to: honor and remember those who perished, pay tribute to those who served so unselfishly in the recovery operation and to show our continued support for all those who were affected by the events of 9/11/01. Refreshments and the summit meeting will be held afterwards.

9/11 Memorial Ceremony

New Island Hospital is hosting a special memorial ceremony commemorating the brave souls who gave so much for our country on September 11, 2001. Art in the Park Event Seeks Local Artists

The Women’s Club of Farmingdale is sponsoring the Second Annual Art Show and Sale (rain date Sept. 13) on the Village Green in Farmingdale. Artists are invited to bring their paintings, drawings, photographs and sculptures to show. Ribbons will be awarded for first, second, third place and honorable mention placement. Reservations are available now. Entry fee is $50 (not refundable) for a 10-foot square area. Walk in Honor of Navy SEAL Lt. Michael Murphy

Lt. Michael Murphy was killed in a fierce firefight in mountainous terrain along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. He led a four-man special reconnaissance unit that was reported to be trailing a high-ranking terror leader when they were ambushed by scores of insurgent fighters. Murphy was shot when he climbed to higher ground to send an electronic call for help. Wounded, Murphy completed the call and continued fighting. As a result, he was awarded the Medal of Honor. The walk will be held at 9 a.m. at Bethpage State Park, Polo Field. All proceeds benefit New Island Hospital’s Emergency Department. Property Tax Exemption Outreach Forum

If you live in and are the owner of a home, condominium or cooperative apartment, you may qualify for hundreds of dollars in property tax savings each year. To help you learn more about the property tax exemptions you may qualify for, the NC Dept. of Assessment is bringing its office operations to the Farmingdale Library, 116 Merritts Rd., from 2 to 4 p.m., to process your exemption applications (for basic and enhanced STAR, veterans, senior citizens, Cold War veterans, volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers, limited income disability and home improvement) on-site. American Sign Language Classes

Interested in learning the third most popular language studied in the United States? This fall, Mill Neck Services will offer American Sign Language classes at its new Day Habilitation and Interpreter Services building, 501 S. Broadway, Suite A, Hicksville. Within New York State, many school districts now recognize ASL as a “foreign” language, providing credit towards a Regents diploma. Enroll today in the level 1 adult ASL classes, to be held on Mondays from 6:30 to 9 p.m. from Sept. 14 through Nov. 30. As with other languages, the deaf community, in response to cultural and technological change, is constantly introducing new vocabulary. Register today and become a part of this expanding community. Volunteers Needed

The Mill Neck Family of Organizations is seeking volunteers to work at food sales, children’s activities, apple booths and more during the Fall Harvest Festival to be held on Oct. 10 and 11. The outdoor festival, known as “Apple Sale,” features a wide variety of apples and seasonable produce, craft items, a Cheese House, deaf specialty items and much more. Volunteer support from local civic and church groups, students, alumni, staff, parents and faithful supporters, have made this a special and memorable event. Volunteers can work from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., 12:30 to 5 p.m. or all day. Food tickets will be provided for all volunteers who work four or more hours. This year, the Mill Neck Family will host a “Kick-Off Breakfast for Volunteers” on Oct. 3 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Deaf Education Center. Open to all 2009 volunteers ages 16 and over, the event will feature a delicious continental breakfast, an orientation and a long-time volunteer recognition ceremony. Have a fond Fall Harvest Memory? •Bingo every Monday and some Saturdays there is a Bingo Game to support the Arthritis Foundation LI Chapter. •Do You Speak Yinglish? The Yiddish Club, an entertaining, enjoyable, social experience, allows individuals of varying language abilities to speak “Yinglish,” a combination of Yiddish and English.
