Catholic Studies Program

“Catholics Confront the Challenge of the Great (Messina) Earthquake: Europe’s Worst Natural Disaster” will be held in the Nassau Community College Center Building at 7:30 p.m. The earthquake occurred Dec. 28, 1908 in the Messina Strait which separates Italy from Calabria. The quake’s magnitude was 7.5 by today’s Richter Scale. A devastating tsunami formed causing 40-foot waves to crash down on coastal cities. The death toll was estimated at 200,000. During his presentation, Dr. Salvatore LaGumina will speak about the disaster and the reaction to it. Free and open to the public. Registration and a parking permit required. Call 572-7472.

Garden City H.S. Freshman Barbecue – Class of 2013

The Garden City High School Class of 2013 is invited to attend the 6th annual Freshman Barbecue at 6:30 p.m. in the high school cafeteria. The GCHS PTA organizes this event to welcome the 9th graders and ease the transition into an exciting new school environment. The evening’s $15 ticket price will include music by Lovett Entertainment, delicious barbecue food, games and raffle prizes. All members of the Class of 2013 have received an invitation/permission form in the mail that must be completed and received by Sept. 21. Extra forms are available at the high school main office. Donations from freshmen family and friends to make this event most successful and memorable are requested. Your choice of donations includes gift certificates, fun door prizes, desserts, and appetizers. Flu Clinics

Resurrection and The LIFE Church will hold flu clinics open to the community to get immunized with the flu or pneumonia vaccination, delivered by a Walgreen’s pharmacist. Immunizations will be available today at Resurrection Lutheran Church, 420 Stewart Ave., Garden City, from 9 a.m. to noon and at The LIFE, 1 Old Westbury Rd. (at Jericho Tpke., Old Westbury), on Oct. 2 from 9 a.m. to noon. Walgreen’s will handle all the paperwork for Medicare recipients. Medicare recipients will have no out-of-pocket expense. All others can submit their insurance information to Walgreen’s and each individual’s health insurer or insurance plan will respond according to coverage plan for the immunization. On the day of the clinic non-Medicare participants are asked to bring cash or check for $25 for the basic flu shot. LI Choral Society Young Voices Open Auditions

Auditions will be held at 5 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Rockville Centre and are open to boys from ages 8 to 12 with unchanged voices, and girls from ages 8 to 16. The children will be tested for singing voice range, timbre and pitch matching. A parent’s orientation meeting will be held during the rehearsal which will follow the auditions, beginning at approximately 6 p.m. Rehearsals will be held on Sundays (excluding holidays) from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Holy Trinity Open House

Investment Bond Town Hall Meeting

Garden City residents will vote to approve or reject a $36.5 million school investment bond on Tuesday, Oct. 27. Voting will take place from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. at Garden City High School. The Joint Conference Committee of the four POAs, in cooperation with the Garden City Board of Education, is sponsoring a Town Hall meeting at Garden City High School to discuss the $36.5 million school investment bond. It is set for 8 p.m. and is open to all residents. It will include a question and answer session.

Calling all Girls/Parents Interested in Girl Scouts

Become part of the largest organization of girls and women in the world. Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place/ Do you like crafts, science, math, camping, trips, helping others? Come find out what it’s all about. Girl Scouts get to make new friends, do community service projects, earn awards and to have fun. Many girls in Garden City waiting for troops and leaders are needed in order to place them. New girls are always welcome. There will be an informational meeting for parents and girls interested in Girl Scouts at 7:30 p.m. in the Garden City Library small basement meeting room. All schools in Garden City are welcome. Girl Scouting in Garden City will be discusse and registration materials for girls, leaders and other adult volunteers interested in joining a troop will be provided. Local Chefs Support the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program

Local chefs and food purveyors are supporting the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program through fund raising and education for the month of October with special dishes, drinks, promotions and information. The Garden City Hotel, 45 Seventh St., will donate 10 percent from each “Think Pink” menu item at their Rein restaurant; items will include a Pink Ribbon Martini and select dishes by Belgian Chef Steven De Bruyn. Children’s Books Featured at Westbury Friends Fair

The Westbury Friends Fair on Post Ave. at Jericho Tpke. has been a local tradition for 56 years, this year featuring new and gently-used children’s books. Also for sale: a wide range of books for adults, antiques and attic treasures, household items, as well as home-baked goods, flowering plants and fresh farm produce. Games are provided to keep children occupied while adults browse. Lunch is available and the LI Traditional Music group will provide lively music on the patio. The event is held rain or shine from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. All items are donations; no dealers are included.

American Heart Walk

Nassau Community College is the official Nassau County location for this year’s American Heart Walk. The walk will take place at the NCC Field House, with a health fair and registration from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and the walk itself starting at 10 a.m. The walk, sponsored by the American Heart Association, is a 5K walking event established to raise funds in the fight against heart disease and stroke on Long Island. Free Legal Seminar About Elder Abuse

Presented by the Nassau Community College Paralegal Studies Program and the Women’s Bar Association of Nassau County at 7 p.m. in the College Center Building. Among the topics presented in the seminar will be identification of elder abuse in its various forms: financial, physical and psychological; available actions when elder abuse is suspected; and advance directives. Family court petitions, government rules and regulations and available resources for the elderly will also be discussed. Investment Bond Open Meeting

The Garden City PTA will hold an open meeting with school district officials to discuss the $36.5 million school investment bond and answer resident’s questions. This will take place at Garden City High School beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Garden City Public Schools Investment Bond Tours

On Oct. 27 the Garden City community will be asked to vote on the 2009 School Investment Bond, which addresses the district’s most pressing health and safety, code requirement and spatial issues. The proposed bond includes capital projects in all nine district buildings. The public is invited to join district administrators for school building tours to view some of the areas that would be addressed by the bond.
