The New Hyde Park Wildcats will be hosting their 12th annual TOPSoccer Tournament on Sat. 17th at the Denton Avenue fields. The games start at 9 a.m. All the LIJSL TOPSoccer Programs are invited to participate at this fun-filled event, right in our own backyard. If you have never witnessed TOPSoccer, here’s your opportunity to see what it’s all about. Besides the soccer games taking place on seven fields, there will be team photos, refreshments and awards for all the athletes. Anyone interested in helping out, please contact Richard Bletsch, TOPSoccer Director, at 516-328-3043.
TOPSOCCER
Another great week of soccer was enjoyed at Center Street as the TOPSoccer Program was in high gear. Even though the junior match had a clear-cut winner in goals scored, both teams played really hard. Nelson Molina had the Bears only goal while Sam Duggan, Andrea Cellucci, Kyle Hanratty and Petros Panomeritakis tallied for the Roaring Lions. If not for Harrison Stein’s great play in goal, the Bears would have had a chance to tie the game. The seniors had another brutal, serious contest. The red team jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the 1st half with goals by Adam Strominger and Brett Tirado. Matt Saraiva was able to score one for the green team right before half-time. The second half was a defensive struggle but not for the lack of scoring opportunities. The defense came up big time and again with great stops. The tying goal came on a breakaway by Billy Russo who took a lead pass, dribbled down the length of the field and finished with a strong shot to the short side of the goalie. Super game. Cosmos 3 vs. Volcanos 2 – . Thomas Donnelly had a beautiful crossing pass on a very nice goal by Sean Kerwin to put the Cosmos up 1-0 early in the first half. After being down 2-0, the Volcanos battled back. Ryan Moon scored on a sliding kick which just passed Kunal Suri who played tough in goal for the Cosmos. Evan Bandini took the corner kick that lead to Ryan’s goal. On a strong kick from the right side, Evan scored the second goal for the Volcanos to send the game into halftime tied at 2-2. The Cosmos’ Thomas Donnelly scored his second goal of the game in the second half to give the Cosmos a 3-2 lead. Nick Duras played outstanding in goal in the second half to secure the one goal lead and eventual win. Matthew O’Neal played a very good game in goal for the Volcanos including an awesome stop on a penalty kick. Daniel Hannah played superb on defense for the Cosmos. Kunal Sheth was strong for the Cosmos at defender and midfielder. Patrick Devine and Matthew Chung played extremely well for the Cosmos at midfield. Tommy Fitzpatrick, Alex Lopes and Dennis Stylianou all showed fine footwork at forward for the Cosmos creating several chances for the Cosmos team. Joe Tomich and Ryan O’Sullivan played good all-around games for the Volcanos.
INTRAMURAL – GIRLS
Soccer Stars vs. Firecracker
The Soccer Stars played a phenomenal game today, despite the wetconditions. Each and every player played their heart out today, playing very aggressively, beating their opponents to the ball which was a key part of the game. Awesome mid-field plays by the talented Paden Dvoor who went to the ball each time not waiting for the ball to come to her then switching play to the opposite side of the field and passing up the line to her offense led by Daniela O’Modie, Irene Tsahas and Madeline Slaski. In goal for the Soccer Stars making tremendous saves, punting & throwing the ball out quickly and utilizing her entire goal box was Irene Krische. Battling it down on defense was the very strong Channing Woo & Isabella Mirro not letting the ball cross in front of the net forcing their opponent to the sideline. Very impressive and aggressive offensive play by Marissa Cronin following through the ball and staying with the opponent. On a goal kick punt by Irene Krische to near the mid field line the forwards were able to time the bounce of the ball accurately and take control as Irene Tsahas making a great chest trap of the ball turning and running past the defense to blast a solid shot in goal as the Soccer Stars take the lead. The pressure was on. Second half of play, The Firecrackers came back strong to tie up the match. It was back and forth plays by both teams. Marcela Curcio, Kassidy Keefe & Shreya Rao keeping the pressure on to net a goal. Allison Liman & Lior Cole holding strong on the offensive, ready for the pass to drive down center field. Roaring Tigers 2 – 2 Massapequa Express It was the first home game for the Roaring Tigers taking on a ready and waiting Massapequa Express team. The offense was working hard in the first half for the Tigers, but Massapequa did all they could to keep the ball on the Tigers side of the field. Leading the charge was Siohban McMullan, Dylan Sanders, Jordyn Siegel, Marisa Menist and Shayna Zeitlin. The Defense was powered by Camryn Dluginski, Lauren Perlman, Bethany Ambrosio, Alley Petricca, Deirdre Lynch, and a fired up Silvana Siedita who stepped up her game on defense handling the ball and clearing it down field several times very nicely for our offensive charge. Massapequa broke down the defense two times in the first half for two goals. It was late in the second half that Jordyn Siegel got her chance on a fast break to finally put a score on the board for the Tigers. Olivia Lugo used power and speed as she slammed a shot deflecting off a defenders foot and popped over the goalies head with less then two minutes on the clock to end the game in a tie for us.

NHP Tornado Tigers 1 Vs. Auburndale 1 –
NHP and Auburndale battled to a 1-1 tie in a very well played defensive game. The Tornado Tigers took the lead early in the 2nd half on a beautiful goal by Maggie Donnelly. Mariela Facibene played terrific in goal in the first half shutting out the tough Auburndale team. Debra Keller made several good saves in the 2nd half to preserve the tie. Samantha Merino, Kimberly Keblish and Abby Wizel played terrific all around games. Danielle Gerbe and Milla Skugor played strong games on defense for the girls from New Hyde Park. Mariela also had a very good second half at midfield. Kristen Granieri played an aggressive game at forward for the Tornado Tigers. Jennifer Morrone, Nicole Farishian, Julia Gordon, Emma Blancher and Natalie Kariotis showed off improved passing skills but Auburndale played strong defense to keep the game knotted at one.

Kitkats Vs. Lynbrook Thunder
The Kitkats opened the 2009 fall season with a tough 2-3 loss to the Lynbrook Thunder. Both teams put on great performance and the Kitkats despite missing their veteran defensive leader Brittany Apuzza, fought valiantly until the final whistle… Lynbrook opened the scoring with nice breakaway goal but Kitkats did not let up and tied the score with an opportunistic shot from outside the 18 by Sarahelena Barrios who played like real leader on the field. The Thunder took the lead again on a tough shot but the relentless Kitkats battled back to tie the score with two great hustle plays. Catherine “Kitty” Saketos fought hard to get a loose ball in the 18 which Hannah Werner furiously went after to knot the score. The defense was anchored by the inspired play of Olivia Namendorf while Ashley Vicente filled in nicely for the injured Brittany and Annie Werner played one of her best games. New comers Alessia Cooney and Sabrina Balducci shared goaltending responsibilities and both showed good instincts and decision making. Katya Keblish and Laura Roantree continue their excellent play and helped control the midfield. Gaby Santoli and Catherine Lyons played well on the offensive end pressuring the Thunder defense. Athena Shahipour played both offense and the midfield and did well in her first game with the Kitkats. Despite giving up a late goal on penalty kick, the Kitkats were pleased with their performance and showed promising signs for the rest of the season.

Saturday, September 26th the NHP Cheshire Cats played NHP Lady Leopards. A very exciting save and full team effort kept the ball out of the net in the early first half. There was also another great save by goalie Marissa Pino from a corner kick. NHP Cheshire Cats first goal was a left footed boot on a breakaway over the goalies head by Alison Forte. Going into the half the score was 1-0. The second goal for the Cheshire Cats was scored by Forte off a terrific corner kick by Meagan Iovino. Second half saves by newcomer goalie Jillian Edelstein were fantastic! The teams played an exciting game with the final score tied at 2-2. Great game girls!!!

New Hyde Park Panthers
The BU13 New Hyde Park Panthers captured its first win of the fall season in a 2-1 victory over Massapequa on Saturday, September 26. The Panthers kept Massapequa off balance the entire first period, keeping the ball in their half of the field for the first twenty minutes of the game. Starting his first game since coming off the injured reserved, Pauric Coyle, forward, scored the first goal of the game with a beautiful chip shot that sailed over the Massapequa goal tender. The Panthers defense took over the game. Lead by Kyle Facibenie, Mike Varrone, Kevin Pavlidis, and Peter Tagios, they used their speed to catch and block every Massapequa forward who tried to enter the box for shots. During the second half, Connor Kearney came down the right side and kicked a screamer of a shot that hit the Massapequa defender and went in. The Panthers were up 2-0 in the second half when a foul in the box by the Panthers gave the Massapequa team a chance to score off a penalty kick. With Sam Stempler in goal, the coaching staff knew they had a chance to stop the kick. Sam dove to the left once the kick was on its way and stopped the ball from going in. Also contributing to the victory was Mike Lopez who played solid in the field controlling the midfield and distributing the ball to his forwards. In addition, Jake Kennedy dominated in mid-field, winning almost every header he went up for. Go Panthers!
