Rummage Sale

Temple Tikvah, formally known as Temple Emanuel of New Hyde Park, and Temple Israel of Jamaica will hold its annual rummage sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Highlights this year include costume jewelry, watches, pocket books, clothes, shoes, books and household items. Vintage fashion finds and great bargains. Temple Tikvah is located at 3315 Hillside Ave., New Hyde Park. Also on Oct. 12 from 9:30 a.m. to noon.

Stewart Manor Homemaker Evening Chapter

(Including Garden City, Franklin Square, Floral Park and West Hempstead communities) will hold its meeting in the Stewart Manor Village Hall at 7:30 p.m. There will be a Witches Costume Party held after the business meeting. FP-Bellerose School PTA Meeting

The next meeting of the Floral Park-Bellerose School PTA will be held at 9 a.m. in the school auditorium. All are welcome. Babysitting and refreshments will be available.

Chamber Fall Street Festival

The Floral Park Chamber of Commerce will be holding its annual Street Fair (cancelled in June) from 5 to 10 p.m. along Tulip Ave. All the same features as the June Fair: live music, local restaurant delicacies, refreshments, bargains, kids amusements, face painting, clowns, discounts, raffles, prizes and more. All are welcome. Bring the whole family. Meet your community organizations.

Free Senior Care/Wellness Expo

Meet Long Island’s leading senior care and wellness experts at Family & Children’s free “Older, Wiser and Yes, Better! Expo” scheduled for from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Bristol Assisted Living, 117 Post Ave., Westbury. This expo is perfect for seniors, soon-to-be-seniors and those who care for them. Attendees will have the opportunity to gather information on long-term care options, meet experts in estate planning and senior services, plus see demonstrations on health and wellness. John Lewis Childs School Harvest Fair

The John Lewis Childs School PTA will hold its 23rd annual harvest fair from noon to 4 p.m. on the school grounds, Elizabeth St. The fair will feature music, pizza, hot dogs and ice cream. Youngsters will enjoy decorating a pumpkin, a train ride, inflatable bounce castle, sand art, spin art, games, and if you dare, take a stroll through the “Spook Walk.” Admission is free, so come on over and shop for your beautiful fall flowers. The fair will be held rain or shine.

Fall Holiday Vendor Fair

The Rosary Altar Society of Our Lady of Victory Church is holding its fall holiday vendor fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Memorial Hall at Our Lady of Victory School, 2 Bellmore St. The fair will feature vendors of unique jewelry, baby sweaters, creative crafts, Irish imports, handmade rots and many more items. In additional, baked goods and sweepstake prize raffle tickets will be for sale. Interested vendors should call Andrea Mulligan at 354-7091 for reservations. Table reservations are $40 each.

Hair Cutting Event in Stewart Manor

The Junior Women’s Club of Bellerose and Salone Di Capelli in Stewart Manor will host the second Pantene Beautiful Lengths hair-cutting event. People of all ages are invited to grow, cut and donate 8 inches or more of their hair to make wigs for women who lave lost their hair due to cancer treatment. Pantene and the Entertainment Industry Foundation have partnered with HairUWear to create this first-of-its kind campaign that encourages people to donate their healthy hair to make high quality, hand tied, real hair wigs. Once the donations are received and free wigs are made they are distributed through the American Cancer Society’s extensive network of wig banks across the country. Craft Fair/Flea Market

St. Elisabeth’s Church, 6 Harvard St. (off Tulip Ave.) will hold its semi-annual Craft Fair/Flea Market from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fifty vendors from all over Long Island will present their wares – hand-made articles, crafts, white elephants, books, jewelry, new clothes, etc. Vendors from Mary Kay, Tupperware, Avon, Tastefully Simple and Pampered Chef will also be present. Food will also be served.

STAC Flea Market

Sewanhaka High School’s Students and Teachers Against Cancer (STAC) flea market – originally scheduled for Oct. 3 – was postponed until today from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. in front of the Sewanhaka High School building. All proceeds will benefit the Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS) Foundation in memory of Lisa Zahler.

Christmas Boutique

There will be handcrafted items, Chinese auction, white elephants, del take-out (or eat in) food, estate jewelry, Christmas gifts, bakes goods and more. Upcoming Event

Flu Shots To Be Administered

This year’s flu shots will be administered Oct. 28 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Floral Park Recreation Center. Registration is required. As in prior years, the program will be administered by the L.I.J. Medical Center. You will need to present your Medicare card in order to receive your shot. To register, call Scotty Beetle at 354-4933. Note that this is not for swine flu inoculation.

Bellerose Jewish Center Used Book Sale

JLC School Kick-Off Reflections Program

The John Lewis Childs School PTA will officially kick-off the 2009-10 National PTA Reflections Program at the school. The theme for this year is “Beauty is…” The deadline for entries is Nov. 4. The National PTA Reflections Program is a national arts recognition and achievement program open to students in K through grade 6 in the areas of literature, musical composition, photography, visual arts, dance choreography and film production. The works of art will be judged by professionals in the respective arts areas and selected works will be advanced to the Nassau Regional PTA. From that point, selected works will advance to the state or national levels for judging.

Monthly Events

•Look Good…Feel Better, sponsored by LIJ Medical Center in association with the National Cosmetology Association, the Toiletry Fragrance Association and the American Cancer Society. The program reaches out to women with cancer and teaches them how to best apply makeup and wear their hair while undergoing cancer treatment. Meets on the second Monday of every month at LIJ Medical Center, 27005 76th Ave., New Hyde Park. Reservations suggested, but not required. Call Harriet Pine or Selma Robinton 718-470-7094. All women who attend receive a makeup kit filled with brand-name cosmetics valued at over $200.

•Family Promise of NC. Are you concerned about helping homeless families in our local communities? You are invited to meetings for Family Promise of Nassau County, Inc., the third Monday of every month, at 7:30 p.m. at the New Hyde Park Baptist Church, 635 New Hyde Park Rd., NHP (352-9672 ). •Stewart Manor Auxiliary Police Unit 105 is currently having an ongoing Recruitment Drive. Meetings are held on the last Monday of each month at the Village Hall, 120 Covert Ave. (side entrance on Chester Ave.). Those interested should call Deputy Inspector John Egan 573-7521 to find out more.

•Garden City Ski Club meets on the first and third Wednesdays through April (except holidays) at 7:30 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus, 1000 Marcus Ave., New Hyde Park. •Free/Low Cost Health Insurance. The residents of communities served by Mercy Medical Center will have the opportunity to apply for free or low cost health insurance for children, families and adults up to age 64 on the first Thursday of every month from 5 to 7 p.m. in Mercy’s Main Lobby. Staff from Catholic Charities of LI will assist you and our children applying for Child Health Plus, Family Health Plus and Medicaid Health Insurance Programs. The bi-lingual enrollers will screen adults for income eligibility for the state’s health insurance program Family Health Plus. Children are eligible for Child Health Plus. These programs cover medical check-ups, hospitalization, emergency care, prescriptions, vision and dental care.
