Story Theatre
Nassau Community College Dept. of Theatre and Dance presents the children’s theatre production of Story Theatre by Paul Sills. It is a charming production featuring playlets based on fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm. Dahlia Display
Hicks Nurseries, 100 Jericho Tpke., Westbury, will be the place to come to see gorgeous, colorful display of dahlias. The Mid-Island Dahlia Society will put on a dazzling show of dahlias ranging in size from “thumbnail” to 12 inches (“dinner plate”) in diameter. Garden City Public Schools Investment Bond Tours
On Oct. 27 the Garden City community will be asked to vote on the 2009 School Investment Bond, which addresses the district’s most pressing health and safety, code requirement and spatial issues. The proposed bond includes capital projects in all nine district buildings. The public is invited to join district administrators for school building tours to view some of the areas that would be addressed by the bond. Haunted House for Cancer Research
The 7th Annual Szuba Family Haunted House for Cancer Research will take place on Oct. 24 and 25 from 3 to 9 p.m. at 92 Meadow St., Garden City. Rain or shine. The event is held each year and it is a wonderful way for families and kids of all ages to enjoy some Halloween fun and take part in raising money for a good cause. For a $5 admission fee you can be escorted through a haunted mansion by a ghoul or a friendly witch (student volunteers), walk through a haunted graveyard and enjoy some delicious Halloween bake sale goods. All proceeds benefit the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research and the MIRACLE Foundation (donation checks are welcomed and are tax deductible). Celebration of Breast Cancer Survivors
Breast cancer survivors, family and friends will come together for the 16th annual Breast Cancer Celebration of Survivorship of the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. The free event, held at Adelphi’s University Center Ballroom. begins at 6:15 p.m. with a light supper; the program starts at 7 p.m. Five breast cancer survivors will speak about their personal experiences with the disease and what sustained them and helped them to move forward. Safe Halloween Party for Kids
The American Red Cross believes that the trick to having a fun Halloween is to knowing how to remain safe. To help children learn about safety, the Nassau Red Cross will open its doors for a Halloween Safety Party. Children, ages 6 to 11, are invited to participate in the event which will include carnival style games and a haunted house. They will learn what to do if a friend is choking; what to do if approached by a stranger; and other ways to remain safe while trick or treating. Children are encouraged to wear costumes; however, they are to be non-violent with no weapons, nor full-face masks. Admission is $5 per child and attendees must register in advance. Breast Cancer Support Groups
The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer program is offering new support groups. There is no cost for any group; however preregistration is required. Do You Know What the Acronym FOM Stands For?
You may be surprised to hear that it is the Friends of Music (FOM), a not for profit organization whose sole purpose is to encourage Garden City music students and promote the music programs at our schools. None of these expenditures were covered by the school district’s budget. The Garden City Friends of Music has approximately 700 families as members. Be among those that join this year. Your $20 donation is used to pay directly for equipment and program enhancements for Grades K to 12. In addition to the membership dues, FOM raises money through its popular flower sales prior to the concerts at the elementary, middle and high schools. The membership drive for 2009-2010 is underway. St. Anne’s Church Fall Coat Drive
St. Anne’s Church, 35 Dartmouth St., is currently holding its annual fall coat drive through Oct. 25. Every year, hundreds of men, women and children in Nassau County live through the cold winter season without a warm coat. There are more struggling families this year because of the current economic downturn. You can help by dropping off new or gently used clean coats, jackets or sweaters. The collection closets are open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Enter through the main church doors, go to the top of the stairs and the closets are on the left. Bag all donations and label as: men, women or children. Individual donations and collection efforts at your office, school or community organization are encouraged.
