As part of the year-long celebration marking its 150th Anniversary, St. Ignatius Loyola Parish will be holding a Dinner Dance on Nov. 14 from 7 to 11 p.m. in Msgr. Tarrant Hall, E. The Mid-Island Dahlia Society will put on a dazzling show of dahlias ranging in size from “thumbnail” to 12 inches (“dinner plate”) in diameter. •Oct. 17: Digging and Storing Summer Bulbs and Tropical Plants. If you take care of your summer bulbs and tropical plants, they will bloom for you year after year. •Through Oct. 31: Family Fun. There will be tractor-drawn hayrides and roasted corn on the weekends, a barnyard of farm animals, homemade fudge, candied and fudge apples, fresh-baked pies, New York State apples and thousands of pumpkins. The popular Otto the Ghost, appearing in person and in the free animated story Otto’s Green Halloween, in which the little ghost learns simple ways to help the earth through recycling and reusing. Hicks asks visitors to bring a nonperishable food item. All the food collected will be donated to Long Island Cares to benefit hungry people on Long Island.
•Oct. 31: Tucking Your Pond in for the Winter. Getting your pond ready for winter begins in the fall. Our pond expert, Rich Fronc, clears away the myths and misconceptions about what ponds, fish and plants need to get through the winter. 2 p.m.
