McKevitt Celebrates Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Assemblyman Thomas McKevitt has joined with the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program in their October breast cancer awareness campaign to urge women to get mammograms.

The National Cancer Institute has estimated that for the United States in 2009, 40,170 women died as a result of having breast cancer. “I urge all my constituents to take initiative and get their annual mammograms. Early detection is the key to preventing the disease from spreading and to also ensure that you are not at risk. Approximately 95 percent of all mammograms prove to be normal,” McKevitt said.

For more information and to locate an accredited mammography facility nearby, call the Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program at 800-877-8077. The past 29 years Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline has been providing emotional support from volunteers, many of who are women that have had breast cancer. You can also find more information on events and ways you can help yourself and others by logging onto www.adelphi.edu/nysbreastcancer.

“The best defense against breast cancer is regular screening tests, which I advise my constituents to schedule. The Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program is a great opportunity to speak with fellow breast cancer survivors as well as trained volunteers for support. All services are free and extend their welcome,” McKevitt said.
