TOPSOCCER
NHP hosted their 12th annual TOPSoccer Tournament at the Denton Avenue School last Saturday and it was another wonderful event. Despite overcast skies, a 2-week postponement and occurring on Halloween morning, there were an abundance of exuberant players competing just for the fun of it. Teams came from Garden City, HBC, Sachem, P/OB, NHP and our 2 newest clubs, Hauppauge and South Huntington. NHP, once again, gave a good representation of our club. The juniors were Joshua Hom, Petros Panomeritakis, Brittany Anderson, Arta, Chris Cooney and Mary Glass. Even though the goal tending was outstanding, Nick Mininson, Kyle Hanratty and Samantha Duggan did mange to score goals. Goal keepers also excelled in the intermediate matches. Emily Bosco, Harry Owens, Harrison Stein, Alex Warner and Tristan Yang gave terrific efforts. The seniors have cranked up their game a notch and played .500 ball. Stefani Egre, Brett Tirado and David Glass scored for NHP. Billy Russo was super in goal. The defense was anchored by Andrew Abberton and Debbie Chin. Matt Saraiva, Andrea Matteo, Nick Marangoudakis, Mike Kessaris and Adam Strominger. After the games, there were team photos taken, then on to the food. Refreshments of hot dogs, drinks, snacks, Halloween candy were served by a cheerful group of volunteers. Each player was presented with a medallion, tournament patch, T-shirt and a bag of goodies as mementos of the event. A few Lady Stormcats set up a table and put on tattoos in the festive spirit.
All-in-all it was another super tournament. One of the high points is the cadre of volunteers. NHP has a lot to be proud of, as displayed by the quality and variety of helpers. We had members of the NHP Memorial High School girls soccer team, the Kellenberg boys soccer team, a past club president (Dom Marrano and his lovely wife, Holly), Eileen Stevens (who not only helped Brenda Bletsch cook the hot dogs, but got us the use of the GCP Fire House), Kathy and Joe Abberton (who also got most of the food), Kevin and Curt Walline, Matt and Jessica Bletsch, and an old-time friend, Tony Minerva. A special thanks to Sean McGonigle, Brian, Joe and Andrew, who marked the fields 3 weeks ago and then touched them up again this past week. Thanks to Dave Gilroy, Dawn Ward and Steve Zornberg, who helped bring and set up the nets. Our regular coaches, Rich Bursig (who does anything we need), Katie Bletsch, Katrina Bychko, Danny Naso, Kevin Oster, Andrew Solar, Victoria Stivanello and Jeremy Waite. A very special thanks to Brian Evers and Mary Jo Bursig, who are the best assistants anyone could ask for.
Next week it’s back to Center Street, then we wrap up the season with the parents vs. players grudge match. With all the bad weather and other activities, I think the parents have been neglecting their preparation for this contest and may be sorry they didn’t take it more seriously. The night before the match, it’s the annual LIJSL TOPSoccer Awards dinner at the Huntington Hilton. This plays right into the athletes’ hand as the late night usually has a bigger impact on the ill-conditioned parents. Watch those desserts! Rich Bletsch, Director

NHP Lady Pumas – 5, Oceanside – 0
The NHP Lady Pumas continued their hot-streak with a very workman-like Halloween treat victory against the Oceanside Riptide. The girls used crisp passing to set up their goals, while setting up opportunities for many more. Sophia Leeds got us on the board with a hard crossing pass that deflected off a defender and tucked into goal to make it 1-0 (we will gladly take own-goals any time). Then Tiffany Velin was fed on cross near goal by Isabel Ugolina, and Tiff put away a shot low and hard to make it 2-0 about 10 minutes in. Izzy Glennon finished the scoring in the first half with a nifty cut-back move off a loose ball in front of goal to make it 3-0. In the second half, the girls continued their assault on goal with Kaitlyn Krems tallying a very nice far post goal off a killer pass from Izzy Glennon, followed by icing-on-the-cake goals by Izzy and Tiffany, high and hard. Theodora Papadoniou had a very strong game with 5 shots on goal, including 2 off the post. Cara Becker also had a nice game distributing the ball from the left and middle. On Defense, Mackenzie Griffin, Stephanie Karczewski, Kira Crehan and Casey Sander all performed brilliantly, getting “first to the ball” more times than not, while making some very nice moves to send the ball up the line. Also on D was Isabel Ugolini who had a very strong game – contributing an assist on our second goal of the game, and a very nice shot on goal while pinching up from the defensive position. In goal was Edna Dudek, who stopped everything in her path, punted well, and made some flashy dribbling moves in the field in the second half. In the late stages of the game, the girls moved the ball around the perimeter, left/right/back/up-the line better than I have ever seen them. Keep up that super passing, and wonderful things will happen!! Nice Game, ladies.

Tornado Tigers 0 Vs. Massapequa X-Treme 0 –
Defense and goalie play were again the story of the day for the New Hyde Park Tornado Tigers. Goalie’s Mariela Facibene and Debra Keller played outstanding again. The defense for the Tornado Tigers has been exceptional all year. Stopper Kim Keblish was terrific again while defenders Sam Merino, Danielle Gerbe, Maggie Donnelly and Abby Wizel all play rock solid defense. The Tornado Tigers had some scoring chances including an excellent crossing pass by Abby Wizel that just missed and a nice take away by Milla Skugor who then fired a shot just over the cross bar. Jennifer Morrone played an excellent game at mid field. Nicole Farishian, Emma Blancher, Julie Gordon and Kristen Granieri all played hard at forward for the Tornado Tigers but the Massapequa defense was tough. This was a very evenly matched game between two determined teams but the defenses were too strong. The Tornado Tigers continue the fall season next Saturday Nov 7th at 11:30am at Garden City Park against Valley Stream.

Soccer Stars U 9 Vs. Kitty Kats –
It was a very exciting match-up between the Soccer Stars and the Kitty Kats. Debuting in goal for the Soccer Stars was the amazing Channing Woo. Channing played a phenomenal game as goalie in the first half of play. Making tremendous saves, deflecting the ball and quickly kicking/rolling the ball to her mid-fielders. Great Goal-tending Channing!! We knew you could do it! With great help from her defense breaking up vital plays and playing the ball wide and up the side of the field was Madeline Slaski, Paden Dvoor and Irene Krische. Marking their opponents extremely tight, playing their every move were the mid-field fielders Irene Tsahas and Isabella Mirro running back & forth, side to side, utilizing the entire field of play. On the front line Allison Liman, Marcela Curcio anticipating the play. Down by 2 at the start of the second half of play, in goal for the Soccer Stars was Irene Krische coming out of the goal and grabbing the ball tightly then quickly releasing the ball up to her offenders led Daniela O’Modie, Marcela Curcio & Marissa Cronin who made many incredible runs toward goal. Soccer Stars staying very focused came back and took the lead with three spectacular goals by mid-fielder Irene Tsahas who intercepted plays and dribbled quickly around the defense perfectly positioning each of those 3 goals! Super Goals Irene T. Channing Woo on the offense for the second half, played very aggressively taking impressive shots on goal . The Kitty Kats came back strong tieing up the match at three all until offender Daniela O’Modie receiving a great pass from Irene T. sprinted pass the defense one on one with the goalie shoots a nice ball to the corner of the net near the left post. Nice Teamwork Girls! Holding her position extremely well and following thru her plays Kassidy Keefe on left wing roaring down the sidelines and in toward goal makes a beautiful pass to the front of the net where Irene T. blasts a shot that deflected off the goalie and Daniela O’Modie in perfect position takes the rebound for her second goal of the game. Way Go Soccer Stars! The Soccer Stars played extremely well making nice passes, long throw-ins to the open spot, holding their positions well while marking their opponents closely. Cosmos 3 vs. Celtics 2 –
In a very exciting battle between the first and second place teams in the New Hyde Park Boy U9 division, the Cosmos’ Thomas Donnelly scored the tie breaking goal late in the second half off a nice corner kick. The two evenly matched teams battled throughout the game showing some very nice passing skills by both groups. Thomas also scored the first goal after getting an outlet pass from the defense and making a nice move and scoring on a perfectly placed kick. The Cosmos’ Sean Kerwin scored the second goal on a perfect corner kick. The Celtics battled back though. Chris Carbone was outstanding for the Celtics, making several nice crossing passes and scoring on an excellent kick after halftime. Connor Smith tied it up on an awesome crossing pass. Justin Lau, Adrian Puran, and Sean O’Connor all played very strong for the Celtics. Nick Duras and Kunal Suri were outstanding in goal for the Cosmos to preserve the win. The Cosmos were excited by the return of Daniel Hannah who had missed three games with an injury. Daniel was excellent on defense and at midfield. Matthew Chung and Kunal Sheth played very skillfully on defense as well. What a great game to watch!
