On Oct. 9, New York State Assemblyman Rob Walker (R, C, I, WF-Hicksville) hosted a special event to honor 14 local “Women of Distinction.” The honorees, chosen by a review committee and recognized for their dedication and the impact they have made on their respective communities as business, military, civic, education, health care, volunteer and/or government leaders, were honored at an awards ceremony held at the Plainview-Old Bethpage Public Library.
Congratulations to the following Hicksville residents:
• Frances Duffy is a resident of Hicksville and an active member of the Knights of Columbus Columbiettes and Hicksville Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. She is a Eucharistic minister at St. Ignatius Loyola Church and member of the Hicksville Gardens Civic Association.
• Stephanie Sokenis, a resident of Hicksville, joined the Hicksville Chamber of Commerce Street Fair Committee in 2004 and, over the years, became more involved. She served as director of the chamber’s board and, in November 2008, was named executive director. She was involved with the Hicksville-Jericho Rotary Club, Old Country Road PTA and is currently a trustee on the Hicksville Public Library Board. Sokenis was unable to attend the event.
• Dorothy “Dottie” Specht is a resident of Hicksville and lifelong member of the Hicksville Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, serving on numerous committees, marching in numerous parades and, for over 35 years, chairing the Signal 30 Committee, one of the most important support groups in the fire department.
• Deborah Strube, who works full-time as a director of health information/ medical records, is 2nd vice president of the Hicksville Gardens Civic Association Board. In this capacity, Strube worked to establish relationships between the community and Lowes, working with civic members, business and government to lessen the traffic impact on local roads. She also elicited civic association members to assist with issues involving Sleepy’s Lunar Module and Hooker Chemical.
Congratulations also to the following “Women of Distinction” in the 15th Assembly District: Rose Fuger, Roseanne Hatzelman and Dolores Rome of East Meadow; Lisa Nola and Cynthia Rosicki of East Norwich; Evelyn Ain, Kathleen Aylward, Linda Cazzola and Wanda Grech of Oyster Bay and Lindra Troncoso of Westbury.
