Michelle Kurowski of Hicksville, a sophomore guard at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), was named America East Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the second time in three weeks.
Kurowski led the Retrievers to a 2-0 week with a team-best 21.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. She shot 44.8 percent from the floor (13-for-28) and 87.5 percent from the foul line (14-for-16) while adding four assists and four steals.
Kurowski posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds at Towson on Nov. 24. She made a pair of 3-pointers, went 4-for-4 from the charity stripe and dished out three assists. Kurowski finished the week of Nov. 23-29 with 29 points – one shy of her career high – on 9-of-18 shooting at Bucknell on Nov. 29. She also made a career-best 10 free throws and added a team-best seven rebounds and three steals. Kurowski had 17 points in the first half and also scored UMBC’s last eight points of the game as the Retrievers staved off a furious Bucknell comeback.
Kurowski ranks third in the America East in both scoring (19.4 ppg) and rebounding (8.4 rpg), and she is fifth in free throw percentage (.844). She is the first Retriever to earn Player of the Week twice in a season since teammate Carlee Cassidy won the award three times during 2007-2008.
