LI Choral Society

Continues its 81st season with a concert featuring a performance of the Advent and Christmas portions of George Frederick Handel’s great oratorio, Messiah. The concert will also include selections from Benjamin Britten’s popular work A Ceremony of Carols. Beginning the concert will be a solo performance by Karen Hansen-Gellert on the double bass. The featured soloists are soprano Michèle Eaton, mezzo-soprano Hai-Ting Chinn, tenor Douglas Perry and baritone David McFerrin. 8 p.m. at the Cathedral of the Incarnation, 500 Cathedral Ave., Garden City. The Nutcracker

Presented by the New York Dance Theatre, under the direction of Frank Ohman. This production has added music, scenes and dances and is the only one in the tradition of New York City Ballet’s George Ballanchine. Joining the troupe will be guest artist Arch Higgins, Nicole Loizides and Eric Ragan. In all a cast of 80 children, semi-professional and professional dancers bring this family holiday classic to life on the stage at the John Cranford Adams Playhouse, Hofstra University, on Dec. 18 at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.; Dec. 19, 20 at noon and 5 p.m. Tickets are $35; $28 seniors and children 12 and under. The Love List

The Theatre and Dance Department at Nassau Community College presents the Norm Foster comedy The Love List, which will be performed through Dec. 20 at the Mainstage Theatre. In this thought-provoking comedy, two middle-aged friends, Leon and Bill, concoct a list of attributes of the ideal woman—the top 10 qualities in a mate. When the lovely Justine surprisingly arrives on the scene, the men quickly learn that their list could use a few revisions. Performances will be at 8 p.m. each day except Sundays, when the performance will begin at 3 p.m. Tickets are $9; $7 seniors aged 55 and over. College students with valid Fall 2009 ID will be let in for free when purchasing tickets at the door. For more information, call 572-7676.

Conducted by AAA New York in the Garden City office located at 229 Seventh St. The six-hour course allows participants to get the latest driving information from AAA-certified instructors, a 10 percent discount on collision and liability insurance and a reduction of up to four points from driver’s license. Cultural and Recreational Affairs Board of Commissioners meets on the first Tuesday of each month (except July and August) at 7:30 p.m. at St. Paul’s Senior Center.

Exhibits

• Adelphi University presents its 5th Outdoor Sculpture Biennial installed throughout the landscaped arboretum gardens and pathways of the Garden City Campus, 1 South Ave., through April 1. The exhibition features the diverse works of 14 sculptors and is free and open to the public. Call 877-4462.
• ”Smoked” hosted by The Firehouse Plaza Art Gallery at Nassau Community College, in the plaza level of the College Center Building, through Dec. 23. “Smoked”is an exhibit featuring ceramic artists Anti Liu, Hugh McElroy, Joseph Mitrani and Nancy Robbins. These ceramic artists explore methods of firing and glazing in their work.
• “People, Places and Things,” an exhibition of oil paintings and pastels by Valley Stream artist Noel Darvie will be featured at the Barnes Gallery, 2 Nassau Blvd., Garden City South, through Dec. 24. The exhibition will highlight a variety of  landscapes, seascapes and still life paintings created locally and beyond. Darvie’s works can be viewed on his website at  www.noeldarvie.com. • ’57 Panama Canal Collection. Adelphi University will showcase Global Passage: Selections from the Robert R. McMillan ’57 Panama Canal Collection, through Jan. 10 in the Ruth S. Harley University Center Gallery, 1 South Ave. The exhibit offers a historical perspective of Panama, the Panama Canal and the Panama Canal Commission. It includes documents, books and other items dating back to the initial attempts to build the canal. There are materials related to the strategic and economic importance of the canal in today’s global economy. The collection consists of correspondence created by Robert R. McMillan, former board member and chairman of the Panama Canal Commission, official letters written by other board members and important figures. There are essays, articles and chapters included in Mr. McMillan’s book Global Passage as well as a selection of manuscripts centering on the Panama Canal.

•Zonta Club of LI, member of Zonta International, a worldwide service organization with a local club. Members help advance the status of women and are involved in many community service activities.
