Art Dryce, owner of VideoArt Productions, Inc. based in Palm Harbor, FL, and a POBJFKHS graduate, took home an Emmy Award at the 2009 Suncoast Chapter of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences event. The event, which was held on Dec. 5 at the Gaylord Palms Resort in Orlando, recognizes excellence in the broadcast industry.
“This is the second year we have been nominated for our work on the series Inside The Rays, that airs on Sun Sports and FS Florida,” said VideoArt President and Emmy winner Art Dryce. “We have been producing programs like this for more than a decade and it’s always nice to be recognized for our work.” The program that won is titled Inside The Rays: The Durham Bulls. It examines the beginnings and mystique of the Rays’ Triple A affiliate located in Durham, NC. “We sent a crew to Durham to capture the essence and vibe of the ballpark, get interviews with longtime fans, and spend some time with the current ownership and ballplayers,” said Tom Sipos, VideoArt vice president and the producer of the winning entry. “It all came together to make a great program.”
Dryce remembers his years at POBJFKHS fondly. “My high school days are remembered with fondness filled with so many memories of great friends and wonderful teachers,” he said.
After high school, Dryce went to University of South Florida in Tampa. He graduated with a BA in broadcasting. His dad, David, worked for himself as a CPA and Dryce always wanted to work for myself as well. So in 1983 he started VideoArt Productions while working a full-time job.
Dryce had a rack of editing decks and monitors in a walk-in closet. In 1987, he left Vision Cable and began working full time at VideoArt. After a few years of producing commercials and corporate videos, he had an opportunity to produce the Tampa Bay area version of a program that was being done in a number of other cities in the country. In Tampa Bay the show was called The St. Petersburg Times Sports Extra. They did features on local high school athletes, shot highlites of high school sporting events and compiled it all into a 30 minute program that aired on WTVT FOX 13 in the Tampa Bay area. That experience gave him the opportunity to work with Sun Sports and Fox Sports Florida on weekly and monthly shows for the NFL Tampa Bay Bucs (Bucs Diaries), Miami Dolphins (Dolphins Magazine), NHL Tampa Bay Lightning (The Lightning Report and Inside The Lightning) and the MLB Tampa Bay Rays (Rays Magazine and Inside The Rays).
VideoArt Productions has provided programs for the networks since 1997 for teams in the NFL, NHL and Major League Baseball. The company has produced over 450 television program episodes and over 1,000 television commercials. VideoArt Productions has won previous Aurora and Telly Awards for their work, but according to Dryce this one is a bit more special. “From now on we can say we are an Emmy Award-winning facility. It’s a great honor and we are committed to continuing to produce at this level of excellence,” said Dryce.
Dryce met his wife Cindi while at USF and they were married in July of 1984. They have lived in Palm Harbor, FL since 1985 and have two children Rachel and Ted.
