Year-End Reminders
Village offices will close at 12 p.m. on Christmas Eve in observance of the Christmas holiday and will reopen at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 28.
Village offices will also close at 12 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 31 in observance of the New Year’s holiday and will re-open at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 4. For your convenience, correspondence may be placed in the letter slot at the easterly entrance to Village Hall.
The second half of Village Taxes, which were due and payable on Dec. 1, are subject to penalty if payment is not made within a thirty day grace period. This year, payments received after Dec. 31 will be subject to penalty. Please return the “second half” bill stub with your payment made payable to the Incorporated Village of Garden City. Please note that Village Hall closes at 12 p.m. on Dec. 31 in observance of the New Year’s holiday. For your convenience, tax payments may be placed in the letter slot at the easterly entrance to Village Hall.
The deadline for applications for Veterans tax exemptions is Dec. 31. Applications cannot be accepted after the close of business at 12 p.m. on that date.
Residents are reminded that there will be NO garbage or recycling pickup on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. The holiday collection schedule will be as follows.
Garbage:
Western half of Village (West of Rockaway Avenue) – Monday and Thursday
Eastern half of Village (East of Rockaway Avenue) – Tuesday and Saturday
Rubbish:
Western half of Village (West of Rockaway Avenue) – Wednesday
Eastern half of Village (East of Rockaway Avenue) – Wednesday
Residents scheduled for recycling on Friday, Dec. 25 and Friday, Jan. 1 are asked to put their recyclables out on Friday, Jan. 8.
More Holiday Safety Tips
The Village of Garden City is well protected by our police force and although our crime rate is very low, the holiday season is a prime time for home burglaries. This time of year most of us have quite a few purchases in our homes. Burglars also know that many of us are often away from home at holiday events and parties. To reduce your chances of being the victim of a burglary, the following is recommended:
• Keep your alarm system armed even when you are at home. (A permit is required for an alarm).
• Doors, windows and all entry points should be closed and locked. Before opening up a door, check to see if you know who your caller is.
• During the evening hours, keep your lights on outside. If you have trees and shrubs around your house/windows, try to illuminate them and keep them well trimmed so that they do not become hiding places.
• Ladders and other items that can be used to gain access into your home should be kept locked in a garage or shed.
• Keep an eye on your neighborhood and don’t hesitate to report anything or anyone that seems suspicious.

There is only one regularly scheduled Board of Trustees meeting in January, which will be held on Jan. 14, 2010.
