John Ranaldo Knows Oyster Bay
John Ranaldo of East Norwich recognized the mystery picture in the Dec. 31 issue of the Enterprise Pilot. “It’s the Mill Neck trestle. The one they just replaced. I can tell by looking at the picture. You can see the road below and the woods.”
Mr. Ranaldo is correct and the photograph was taken by Gregory Druhak.
Gregory Adami said, “It’s the train trestle over West Shore Road as the LIRR train goes on to Mill Neck. It’s the old trestle, before the new one was put in. I can tell by the sign and old paint work. The new bridge has rounded edges as it sits on the cement trestle.” That is how observant he is!
The next answer was for the previous week, Dec. 24. “Justin Connolly here. I believe the mystery picture is the road by the Old Jakobson Shipyard. There are a series of corrugated buildings on the south side of the road and the sailing school.” he said correctly.
We received several emails from some of the diaspora of Oyster Bay residents. [Is that a good or bad word to use?]
Rich Reynolds of Niskayuna, NY, identified the mystery picture from the Internet which gives a different date for the mystery photo. He said of the Jan. 1 picture, “That’s the new LIRR bridge over West Shore Road in Oyster Bay. I drove under it last weekend. Very nice job. The MTA has a video of the bridge installation on YouTube.” He added, “Happy New Year!”
Leven Ashby of Hampton, Virginia wrote, “I wouldn’t be too surprised if that isn’t the railroad trestle across West Shore Road between Oyster Bay and Locust Valley. If so, it brings back more childhood memories of walking those tracks to Glen Cove.”
Tony Pilla of Anniston, Alabama wrote of the Jan. 1 Internet mystery picture, “Looks like the railway tracks over the road to Bayville after the Mill Pond. As a youth my friends and I used to walk the tracks enroute to the Mill Neck area.”
“Hello and greetings from the Pacific Northwest,” wrote Rich Mancini, OBHS class of ’68. “It looks like the railroad trestle on West Shore Road going toward or from Bayville.”
“It’s Bella Bella,” said our ebullient Belle Santora. “The mystery picture is the new bridge for the LIRR over West Shore Road.” She added, “Happy New Year!”
Bob Kraupner called and said, “Your latest picture (Dec. 31) is very important to me because I’ve been driving underneath this trestle for about 60 years and it is the trestle which carries the LIRR. It’s just in Mill Neck, approaching Oyster Bay. They’ve just replaced it with a new one. I love your newspaper. Keep up with all the good work keeping all the things happening in our neighborhood in front of everyone.”
We will take that as a reminder for 2010 and will try to keep up with his encouraging words. We should tell Internet readers that they receive only a few items that appear in each issue. There are also articles written by other Anton editors on what is happening in the county, as well as some great columns – some from our group of newspapers, and some just in the Enterprise Pilot. That is just FYI. We are grateful to have the support of all the Anton editors and all our wonderful columnists that help keep the public up to date on what is happening.
