Giant Train Show
Featuring 12 operating model railroads, MTA/LIRR T.R.A.C.K.S. Program and circus model displays. Sponsored by the Bethpage HS PTSA Council and the Northrop Grumman Model Railroad Society. Held at Bethpage High School, Cherry and Stewart Aves., Bethpage (Exit 9, Route 135), from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Donation to the scholarship fund: $4 ($1 for children), good for all ages, snacks and lunch are available, wheel chair accessible. Irish Family History Forum
Presents a talk by Meldon J. Wolfgang III, “Sleuthing in the Stacks: Using Uncommon Resources to Uncover Genealogical Clues.” This presentation will introduce researchers to a host of valuable reference tools and finding aids that can be successfully used by genealogists and family historians of all experience levels, and especially by those who have come up against that research brick wall. Resources regularly used by researchers in other disciplines but rarely used by genealogists are explored and suggestions are given for conducting a successful secondary literature search. There will be a Help Session at 10 a.m. Lecture 11 a.m. Jan. 16 at the Bethpage Public Library, 47 Powell Ave., Bethpage. Everyone welcome.

L.I. Shipwrecks
Adam Grohman, maritime historian and author of 10 books, will speak at a meeting of the Farmingdale-Bethpage Historical Society on “Claimed by the Sea: Long Island Shipwrecks” at 2 p.m. at the Farmingdale Public Library, 116 Merritts Rd. The program begins the Winter Lecture Series of the Farmingdale-Bethpage Historical Society. Grohman, a diver, has explored many of the ill-fated ships he describes in his illustrated presentation, which includes the Savannah, Lexington, USS Ohio, Circassian, Seawanhaka, Oregon, Louis V. Place, General Slocum, USS San Diego, Andrea Doria and the Gwendoline Steers. Free and open to the public.

Children Bounce for a Cause
The Boomer Esiason Foundation is on a quest to eliminate the threat of Cystic Fibrosis and BounceU of Farmingdale wants to help. Children will get to bounce for a cause and enter to win great prizes. BounceU, 101 Carolyn Blvd., will be holding a “Bouncin’ for Boomer” charity event. There will be four different open bounce sessions and be entered to win prizes, including an autographed football. Each paid admission will also receive a Boomer Esiason Foundation bracelet to show support for the cause. BounceU is providing this event for only $15 per child, for children 12 and younger, accompanied by an adult. Proceeds will be donated to the Boomer Esiason. Blood Drive
Mindy Davidson of the Runner’s Edge is hosting a 50th Birthday Blood Drive on from 1 to 7 p.m. in the parking lot behind the Runner’s Edge, 242 Main St., Farmingdale. Come help support her efforts to collect 50 pints of blood in honor of her 50th birthday. Help her celebrate by giving the gift of life to others. In order to donate, you must bring ID with signature or photo, weigh at least 110 pounds and be between the ages of 16 and 75 (16 year olds must have parental permission. New Island Hospital’s free Diabetes Support Group for adults living with diabetes meets the third Wednesday of each month from 1 to 2 p.m. Facilitators are certified Diabetes educators. Bereavement Support Groups
Held by Good Shepherd Hospice, in the convent basement of Our Lady of Mercy, 500 South Oyster Bay Rd., Hicksville. Free of charge. The groups offer education about the grief process as well as support during this painful time and are for those who have lost loved ones within the last year to 18 months. Mommy and Me
Registration is now underway for the Winter/Spring session of the Midshore Mothers’ Center’s Mommy and Me program, an interactive play program, with classes available for children from 6 months through preschool age and their parent or caregiver to share. The program includes story time, play time, music, movement, arts and crafts and snack. A modified separation class is offered for children over three years old. Music and Me classes and Painting and Me classes are also offered. Classes begin the week of Feb. 8. Sibling childcare is available during class time. The Midshore Mothers’ Center, located at 610 Carmans Rd, Farmingdale, is a non-profit, non-sectarian organization of “mothers helping mothers” from local communities, which offers groups, workshops and activities year-round.
LIRID and Mill Neck Interpreter Service Workshop
The Long Island Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (LIRID) and Mill Neck Interpreter Service of Hicksville present a workshop entitled How Do I Interpret This and That? Presented by Jimmy Beldon in American Sign Language, the workshop will be held on Jan. 30 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Nassau Community College in the CCB building, room 252. Beldon will provide an in-depth and practical understanding of skills for interpreters in both ASL and English. Participants will learn tips, receive feedback and have opportunities to take part in effective activities. Open to working interpreters, the workshop will earn participants 0.6 Continuing Education Units. Accommodations are available upon request. Registration deadline is Jan. 16. Fee is $50 per LIRID member; $75 per nonmember. Breakfast and lunch will be included compliments of LIRID. Voice interpreter services will not be available.
